Greek Spirit: Students rush this
week and next to become members
of UK's Greek society

STAFF REPORT

Young women find out Friday who they'll call
“sisters“ when sorority rush wraps up and prospects
become pledges.

The pledges didn't have to endure any Animal
House tactics. Instead. they performed community
service projects and participated in orientation with
different sororities.

“Members have been preparing for this all year,"
said Stephanie Courtright. vice president of recruit-
ing for the UK Pan-Hellenic Council.

The annual school supply drive introduced
pledges to the charitable duties of Greek life. School
supplies were gathered and donated to Fayette Coun-
ty schools to benefit underprivileged children.

Chapter members reviewed bids for membership

sororities and participate in activities with their members.

in their social sororities at the end ofthe week. Using

criteria such as grades. leadership qualities and in-

terests and hobbies. members narrowud the lists of
applicants. The young women were notified Thurs»

day which sororities would accept them as pledges.
Preference parties held Thursday night provided

an opportunity for prospects to decide which sorority

they would ultitnately pledge.
“For them (prospective members). it's mixed

emotions." Courtright said. “Some are upset because

they've been released. but the next day they find
something they like."
Although pledges traditionally hill: during I‘USh

week. the sororities accept bids throughout the year.
depending on the size of their charter.

Delta Zeta will accept pledges for lilL‘ll‘ new UK
chapter the week of August 23-27. Female l'K students
of any academic year may pledge.

But rushing Greek organizations is not over yet.
Beginning next week. the men will open the doors of
their fraternity houses from 8 pm. to midnight. invit

students get adjusted to life at UK

By Robert Ouan
sccnr corron _

UK is trying to make life
a little easier for new stu-
dents getting oriented to
campus life. Kentucky We]-
come. a series of events and
programs designed specifi-
cally for new students, runs
from today through Tues-
day.

“We‘re trying to build
community," said Tammy
Howard. assistant director of
New Student Programs. “It‘s
important, to retain stu
dents, that they feel connect-
ed and a part of the UK com-
munity."

Freshmen. who start
moving into the dorms today
at 9 am, are staring down
the barrel of a week packed
with orientation and getting-
to-knowvyou activities.

New students participat-
ing in Kentucky Welcome
can mingle with their fellow
dorm dwellers at ice cream
socials, figure out the essen—
tials of finance, learn how to
avoid the dreaded ‘freshman
15’ and generally meet and
greet other new students.
There are also more serious
events, such as college-spe-
cific meetings for any of
UK‘s undergraduate col-
leges.

Here are a few Kernel
picks we feel every new stu-

dent should try to attend.

How to use the course listings

By Jonathan Dobson
STAFF WRITER

UK-VIP allows students to adjust their class
schedules from anywhere with a telephone.

To acquaint - or reacquaint - yourself with the
system, dial 7-7000 from campus or 257-7000 from
offcampus.

Personal Access Code

Enter your social security number and your 4-
digit personal access code (PAC.) If you are using
the system for the first time. your PAC will be
based on your birthday - if you were born on Au-
gust 8. for instance. your PAC would be 0808.

For security reasons. the system requires you
to change your birthday-based PAC upon its first
use.

Students who forget their PAC after a long se-
mester or crazy summer should go to 10
F‘unkhouser with a picture ID.

Once you have entered your PAC. UK—VIP will
allow you to add or drop classes.

,i i

Adding/dropping courses

To ensure you don't drop a class only to find
the course you wanted is full. use the option of con-
ditional drop/add. If a specified course is not avail-
able. you won‘t lose the course you already have.

The system refers to classes through their five
digit call numbers. so be sure to have those at
hand. They are found in the 1999 Fall Schedule of
Classes book.

If a class is closed. your best option is to call
the professor to see if there is a possibility of get-
ting in. Often. classes will thin out after the first
couple of days of class as students refine their
schedules.

If a particular class has a hold, there may be
an eligibility requirement. Consult your adviser to
determine whether you can have the hold lifted.

UK-VIP will allow you to add classes until 8
pm. on August 31.

Check your schedule

Use option number five to avoid the embar-
rassment of attending a class you thought you‘d
signed up for, only to find out you don’t have a
seat.
