- Carl Braden and his wife Anne, committed social activists, assisted Andrew Wade IV, a black electrician in Louisville, Ky. and his wife, in 1954 to buy a house in an all-white neighborhood of the community of Shively, Kentucky. The Bradens purchased the home and subsequently transferred it to the Wades. The Wades were persecuted and their house eventually dynamited. The Bradens were indicted for sedition, and Carl Braden was convicted and served eight months in prison until state sedition laws were overturned by the Supreme Court decision in Pennsylvania v. Nelson.
- Scope and Content
- The Carl and Anne Braden papers (dated 1954-1964; 0.23 cubic feet; 1 box) consists of materials that document attempts to integrate housing in Shively, Kentucky. The documents in the collection offer evidence on the bombing of Wade's house (apparently compiled by one of the Bradens from court records). Additionally, the collection contains data on Carl Braden's trial on sedition charges in the Jefferson Circuit Court and later on contempt of Congress charges. The materials are useful in documenting the history of an early civil rights movement in Kentucky, the use of sedition charges in civil rights cases, and the use of the investigatory powers by the United States House of Representatives, Committee on Un-American Activities.
