 A LITERARY snxsa'rlox. ,
In carrying out our intention to make
Tnn COMMERCIAL not only the cheapest,
but the BEST paper publishfid in L0m‘
ville, we call the attention of our readers
to the fact that we have effected arrange-
:angements for the exclusive publication
in this section of a series of eight short
novels by eight of the greatest living Eng-
lish novelists. These stories will be PUD'
lished from advance sheets, simultane‘
ously with their appearance in England.
The writers are the: following gnlinent
novelists:
WILLIAM BLACK.
MISS BRADDON.
RHODA BROUGHTON.
WILKIE COLLINS.
THOMAS HARDY.
' JOSEPH HATTON.
MRS. OLIPHANT.
' “OUIDA.”
‘ Such a galaxy of stars of the first mag-
nitude in the literary firmament. cannot
fail to arrest attention. The imposing
array of frontnrank authors whose works
are thus to be published in succession is
unique. Authors. brilliant by them-
selves, have, in very limited combina-
tions, written in a series before now: but
until the present attempt, no effort, has
been made to publish. in sequence, the
productions of so many leaders in ,the
field of light literature. The list, if will
be observed. is eminently representative.
All schools of fiction have a place in the
, group. A mere glance at the names
quickens into vivid life some of the most
cherished memories—as the charming
touches of natuie in her sublimest
forms, woven into the delightful stories
of William Black; the profoundly abs ‘
sorbing creations of Miss Braddon; the
true perception of feminine character
evinced by Rhoda Broughton; the thrill-
- Eng mysteries of Wilkig Collins; the dra-
- .matic features of country pursuits of
Thomas Hardy; the sterling gifts of.
Joseph Hutton. whose sparkling intellect
discovers in every day facts graphic
phases of human life; the cultured and
refined Mrs. Oliphant. and the exquisite
abandon of “Ouida.”

The project of short stories is designed
to supply a want among the reading
classes, and to increase their number. So
distinctly has the need been felt, that the
observant Saturday Review afiirms that
lhe art of writing short stories has been
neglected. The reproach is now, how— ,
svar, by this series, wiped away. Three
qualities regarded as essential in this de-
partment of art—"ingenuity, originality
and compression”—we do not hesitate to
say will be fully displayed in the works

' we now announce. That the series will
prove immensely popular and add greatly
to the pleasure of our readers, is beyond
question.

It is intended that the first of the series
shall commence publication on Sunday,
March 1, starting with a novelette of.
absorbing interest by “Ouida,” entitled.
“A RAINY J UNE.” a story concluded
in three parts.
