Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- The Watterson Democratic Club was founded in Louisville in 1892. Henry Watterson, for whom the club was named, was invited to join by the original members. Active in supporting the Democratic Party, it provided music for the 1892 Democratic convention in Louisville and raised money to send its members to Chicago for the national convention that year. By 1896, interest in the club had waned. Disagreements in the Democratic Party, and the club's indebtedness resulted in the suspension of club activity in 1897.
- Scope and Content
- The Watterson Democratic Club minute book (dated 1892-1897; 0.2 cubic feet; 1 item) consists of minutes, financial records, and membership lists for the Louisville, Kentucky, political club. The book lists the members and officers of the club including its charter members and contains the by-laws and constitution of the club. Additionally, it records the financial activity of the club; especially its efforts to raise money for a permanent headquarters and for attendance at the 1896 Democratic State and National Conventions. The book contains reports of the activities of the club and other Democratic clubs; the election results for club officers; obituaries of club members; and speeches and correspondence from notable Democrats including Adlai Stevenson and Helm Bruce.
