Add-drop session to be Tuesday at coliseum

By THOMAS J. SULLIVAN
Editorial Editor

Add-drop is one of the more diffiv
cult processes students go through
at the start of each semester.

Each year during the last week of
August. students can be seen enter-
ing the doors of Memorial Coliseum.
schedule books in hand. often curs-
ing the ordeal.

Officials in the registrars office
say they realize Add-drop is a diffi-
cult process for students. but it‘s a
process that most students end up
going through at some point of their
academic careers.

However, there are ways to make
the process more bearable. said
Margey McQuilkin, former director
of records for the office.

"Get your act together. organize

your thoughts and always add be-
fore you drop." she said.

McQuilkin said one of the reasons
students experience difficulty going
through the Add-drop process is be-
cause they fail to prepare for it
properly.

Before students enter the doors of
the coliseum they should “be famil-
iar with the University bulletin and
have an idea of what classes they
would want to take in mind." said
Don Witt. director of advising con-
ferences.

McQuilkin recommended that
while students are standing in line to
inquire about a class, they should
keep alternative sections in mind.
That way. if a desired section is
closed. they can request another
section right away — without having
to stand in line again.

Another way to aquire a desired
section is to find a friend that is
dropping the class you want. she
said. She also suggested hanging
around the table of a particular col-
lege while keeping your eyes open
for someone dropping a class you
want.

But in addition to keeping an open
mind and an alert attitude. there are
other things that students will need
to bring with them to Add-drop. she
said.

Students will be admitted into the
coliseum alphabetically on Tuesday.
Identification will be necessary in
this process.

Students who are preregistered
should bring their schedules with
them. but duplicates will be avail-
able beginning Monday at 12:30 pm.
until Tuesday at 6. After that time.

they will be available in the regis~
trars office.

Add-drop will begin Tuesday for
preregistered students only. Admis~
sion to the coliseum will be handled
alphabetically in 30-minute incre-
ments beginning at 10 am.

The alphabetical admission ends
at 3:30, then all preregistered stu-
dents will be admitted until closing
at 6.

Add-drop will continue through the
first week of classes and end on the
last day to adda class. Sept 1.

No excuses will be accepted from
students claiming not to be able to
attend Adddrop during its regular
hours, McQuilkin said.

Late registration can be done on
Wednesday.

Summertime news

Campus didn’t take summer vacation when most students left Lexington

Staff reports

While most students took a break
from University life this summer.
the news didn‘t.

Nor did this newspaper. During
the hot summer mantis. The Ken-
tucky Kernel continued to cover the
UK campus as a weekly paper.

Perhaps its most important story
was the coming of David Roselle.
The new UK president began his
tenure July 1. and proceeded to
change some of the players while
implementing his game plan for the
University‘s future.

But the Kernel's pages were filled
with more than Roselle taking of-
fice. The University acquired liabili-
ty insurance for its employees.
Radio Free Lexington was granted a
federal license and the UK Medical
Center received a $1.7 million grant.

Here is a modest roundup of the
summer‘s top stories to help keep
you abreastofthenews:

0 Room and board rates were
raised by about 4.2 percent begin-
ningthissernestertocoverasalary
increase for workers at Diniru and
Homing Services.

Dorm residents on a daily meal
plan will be most effected. paying

0 Radio Free Lexington received a
license from the Federal Commu-
nications Commission to operate on
the 88.1 FM frequency. WRFL will
have an effective broadcasting radi-
usof six miles.

Also. the Student Activities Board
allocated RFL space in the Student
Center for construction of two stu-
dios and office space for production.
information and training depart-
ments.

However. the UK Physical Plant
Division estimated that RFL would
need to spend nearly $25010 to reno-
vate the room. an expense that was
at least $000 more than RFL rep-
resentatives said they initially ex-
pected.

0 The Maxwell H. Gluclr Equine
Research Center was dedicated
after four years of fund raisirg and
construction. James Rooney. chair-
man of the veterinary science de-
partment and an iota-nationally rec-
ognized expert in equine disease
research. will serve as the center’s
director.

0 fire Center for Robotics and
Manufacturing Systems will be lo-
cated behind McVey Rail. The cen-
ts, which is scheduled to open in
June use. will concentrate on re-
search.

0 The “51.8 rnilllaa budget passed
by the Board of Tnlteas was a da-

appointment to many people.
Though the budget represents a 10
percent increase from last year‘s.
then President Otis A. Singletary
called it a “continuation" budget
with little room for growth.

- Uability insurance was bought
for limo UK faculty and staff. who
have been nearly 1'2 years without
coverage. One-year errors and omis-
sions insurance will cost $178,105.

Coupled with the swarm being
spent for about 60 UK administra-
tors and trtstees. the cost is sub-
stantially more than the $13,000 per
year paid for coverage for both
groups until February 1%.

0 The UK Medical Center received
a $1.7 million grant from the Nation-
al Institute of Health for cardiac re
search. Researchers will conduct a
five-year study to determine the ef-
fectiveness of three drugs in curbing
irregular heart rhythms. believed to
belinkedtosudden death.

' UK was ranked among the top 70
research universitia in the nation
by a Princeton. N.J.. foundation. UK
received its Research 1 rank. the
only such in the state. based on
amount of federal pants received
and numberofdoctoratu it gave.

- 1hc Medical Center introduced a
new sports medicine program sched-
uled to begin this fall. The ”am
will povide evaluatim. treatmart

and rehabilitation of athletic inju-
ries. including those of UK athletes.

The program will be created with-
in te College of Medicine's surgery
and orthopedics departments.

0 Alcohol has been tried by 87 per.
cent of 1,252 UK students surveyed
during February and March.
according to a study conducted by
UK’s Survey Research Center. The
study's results were released in
early July by the dean of student's
office.

Twenty-six percent of the students
had smoked as many as 100 ciga-
rettes in their life. Though 43 per-
cent of the students had tried mari-
juana at least once. only 9.5 percent
had med it in the month before the
survey.

0 UK faculty need to have more
input in the administration of the
University. according to a report de-
tailim the school‘s future. The re-
port was compiled by a alt-member
committee — composed mostly of
faculty members — at the request of
former UK President Otis A. Sin-

SGA to have survey
on RFL, dead days

By JAY BLANTON
Executive Editor

in September. about 400 [K stu-
dents will have the opportunity to
voice an opinion on two of the more
volatile student issues on campus.

Students will be asked if they
would favor funding Radio Free
Lexington with a $2 increase in
yearly activities fees.

in addition. they will be asked if
they would favor establishing two
dead days before finals week each
semester.

The phone survey. sponsored by
the Student Government Associa»
tion. will be conducted in early Sep
tember by UK‘s Survey Research
Center.

The survey will have a margin of
error of plus or minus 5 percentage
points. said Timothy Johnson. rc-
search coordinator for the survey
research center.

Two dead days before finals would
give students time to prepare for f l-
nals without having to attend regu-
iar classes. A $2 increase in activ-
ities fees would give Rl-‘L. the
campus radio station. about 330.000
in operating expenses each year.

Students now have one weekend
before finals to prepare for tests.

Student input was wanted on the
dead days issue before the Senate
Council made any final decisions.
according to SGA President Cyndi
Weaver. The council. which is com
posed of faculty and student rep-
resentatives. would decide whether
to create the days.

Results from the survey will go to
the Senate Council's calendar com«
mittee. which “i” conduct a feasibil-
ity study on the dead days. Weaver
said.

Response to the issue has been
less than unanimors. During last
year’s SGA officer elections. some
candidates complained that dead
days would interfere with sorority
rush and disrupt an already estab-
lished University calendar.

SGA members who take both sides
of the issue are working on the
phrasing of the question for the sur»
\ey. Weaver said.

Funding from a fee increase could
possibly be used next semester. said
Kakie Urch. secretary/treasurer for
theRFLboardof directors.

The group has been trying for
nearly two years to secure funding
for a campus radio station. RFL

The funds “would
facilitate getting us on
the air and show the
community . . . what

about. "

members had been pointing toward
an Oct 1 air date. but estimates on
the renovation of a storage area at
the station site exceeded available
funds.

Scott Ferguson. general manager
of NFL. approached Weaver this
summer about the possxbtlity of rats
ing actmties fees

Full-time students currently pay
$8 75 in activities fees each semes-
ter Activities fees. among other
things. pay for student tickets to
home football and basketball games
and help fund SGA and the Student
Activities Board

Weaver said she wanted students
to have the opportunity for input on
the radio issue as well. A student
referendum was considered. but
Weaver said a survey is more scien-
tific because all sectors of campus
are polled.

A referendum. she said. is gener-
ally a biased representation of stu
dent opinion because usually the
only ones that \otc (”’0 those strong-
Iy in favor or strongly against an
issue

The survey question about RH.
funding will also contain a brief de-
scription of the types of program-
ming the station would play. Weaver
said

A fee increase would ensure the
existence of the station. though it
would continue to raise funds
throughout the year. l'rch said. The
funds “would facilitate getting us on
the air and show the community
what college radio‘s all about "

If there is a favorable response to
the survey. then hearings will he
held by the radio station for more
student input. Weaver said.

Campus parking lots
patrolled starting today

Staff reports

The UK parking department will
be enforcing parking restrictions on
“A" and “8" lots beginnirg today.

Students who park their cars in
these lots will receive a ticket and
have their car towed.

“A" and “B“ sticka's are restrict-
ed to faculty and staff of the Univer~
sity.

"A" and “B" lots are patrolled
Monday W Friday from 5 am.
until 4:!) pm. said Betty Wade.
manager of the department. Admin-
istration Drive is patrolled Monday
N Thursday from 5 am. until
7zmp.m. .

Now IS also the time for students
eligible for ”‘”( parking stickers to
begin obtaining them.

"C" permits are limited to com-
muter students who are juniors. se»
niors and pad students.

Students can pick up a number to-
morrow at the Student Center Ball-
room. Wade said. These students
can come back Wednesday through
Friday to get their permit

"At that time we will check them
for classification.“ Wade said. "Just
picking up a number doesn‘t shame
the fact that they will get a permit.“

She said exceptions will be han-
dled on a mature basis.
