) PREFACE

) The Inventory of Federal Archives in the States is one of the prod-
¥ ucts of the work of the Survey of Federal Archives, which operated as
5 a nation—wide project of the Works Progress Administration from Janu-
Q ary 1, 1936 to June 30, 1937, and has been continued in Mississippi
t since that date as a state project of that Administration.
; The plan for the organization of the Inventory is as follows:
y Series I consists of reports on the administration of the Survey,
{ acknowledgments, and general discussions of the location, condition,
é and content of federal archives in the states. Succeeding series con-
T tain the detailed information secured by workers of the Survey, in
i inventory form, a separate series number being assigned to each of the
é executive departments (except the Department of State) and other major
@ units of the Federal Government. Within each series No. l is a gen-
t eral introduction to the field organization and records of the govern-
{ mental agency concerned; the succeeding numbers contain the inventory
t proper, separate numbers being assigned to each state in alphabetical
5 order. Thus, in each series, the inventory for Alabama is No. 2, that
Q} for Arizona No. 5, that for Arkansas No. 4, etc. _
Q For each local office information regarding each series, or unit
1 of related records, is presented in the follondng order: title, in-
Q elusive dates (”to date" indicating an open file at the time the in-
i formation was secured), general description of informational content,
Q description of the system of filing or indexing (if any), a statement
f of frequency and purpose of use, form of the record itself (bound vol-
? umes, sheets in folders, etc.), linear footage, description of the
{ containers, physical condition of the records (not stated if satisfac-
g tory), location by room number or other identifying information, and
g finally, the number of the Form 58SA on which this information was
p originally recorded by a Survey worker and from which it was abstract-
j ed for the Inventory. This form is on file in The National Archives.
Q When it contains substantial information on addenda sheets which has
{ not been included in the mimeographed abstract, indication of this is
,y given by use of the reference ”See addenda.”
,‘ In Mississippi the work of the Survey was under the direction of
A Mr. Stanley C. Arthur, regional director for Arkansas, Louisiana, and
Q Mississippi, with thu George E, Schilling as state supervisor, until
A June 50, 1957. Since that time Mr. Schilling has been in charge of
Q the state project, This inventory of the records of the Department
K of War in Mississippi was prepared in the New Orleans office of the
) Survey under the direction of Lrs. Norris Fazekas, editor-in·chief
w and assistant state supervisor, and was edited before final typing by
{ Dr. Henry P. Beers of the Division of War Department Archives of The
{ National Archives.
