Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Born in Charlottesville, Virginia, Joseph Coleman Carter moved with his parents to Woodford County, Kentucky in 1809. He studied medicine with Dr. Daniel Drake in Cincinnati from 1827-1832 and in 1832 graduated from the Ohio Medical College. He married Margaret T. Carlyle that year and began practicing medicine in Woodford County. He was active in the treatment of victims of the cholera epidemic of 1832-1833.
- Scope and Content
- The Joseph Coleman Carter medical account books (dated 1859-1892; 1.35 cubic feet; 3 boxes) comprise ledgers that document the nineteenth century Woodford County, Kentucky physician's practice, with accounts of his patients' visits, treatments, and payments. Most volumes contain alphabetical name indexes and some detail patient birth and death dates. Later ledgers were maintained by the doctor who took over the practice after Carter's death.
