PREFACE
T e Inventory of Federal Archives in the States is one of the
products of the`wEY§Tbf`the Survey of Federaliirbhives, which operated
as a nation—wide project of the Works Progress Administration from
January 1, 1956 to June 50, 1957, and has been continued in Louisiana ~
since that date as a state project of that Administration and of the
‘ Work Projects Administration with Louisiana State University as its
local sponsor. .
The plan for the organization of the Inventory is as follows!
Series I consists of reports on the administration of the Survey,
acknowledgments, and general discussions of the location, condition,
and content of federal archives in the states. Succeeding series
contain the detailed information secured by workers of the Survey, in
inventory form, a separate series number being assigned to each of the
executive departments (except the Department of State) and other major
units of the Federal Government. Within each series No. l is a gen-
eral introduction to the field organization and records of the govern- I
mental agency concerned; the succeeding numbers contain the inventory Q r
proper, separate numbers being assigned to each state in alphabetical
order. Thus, in each series, the inventory for Alabama is No. 2, that
for Arizona No. 5, that for Arkansas Ho. h, etc. g
For each local office information regarding each series, or unit
of related records, is presented in the following order: title, in- ( A
elusive dates ("to date" indicating an open file at the time the in-
formation was secured), general description of informational content,
description of the system of filing or indexing (if any), a statement ·
of frequency and purpose of use, form of the record itself (bound vol-
umes, sheets in folders, etc.), linear footage, description of the con-
tainers, physical condition of the records (not stated if satisfactory), _
location by room number or other identifying information, and finally,
the number of the Form 58SA on which this inforration was originally
recorded by a Survey worker and from which it was abstracted for the
Inventory. This form.is on file in The Ibtional Archives. `Nhen it
contains substantial information on addenda sheets which has not been A e
included in the mimeographed abstract, indication of this is given by
use of the reference "See addenda." 1
In Louisiana the work of the Survey has been under the direction of
Mr. Stanley C. Arthur since its inception, This Inventory of the rec-
ords of the Veterans' Administration in Louisiana was prepared in the
New Orleans office of the Survey under the direction of Mrs. Norris
Fazekas, oditor—in-chief and assistant state supervisor, and was edited p
before final typing by Miss Elizabeth Edwards of the Washington office. `

VETERANS* ADNINISTRATION FACILITY
(A) Administrative Bldg. 1
(B) Administrative Bldg. 2
(C) Administrative Bldg. 5 A
(D) Administrative Bldg. h I
(E) Recreation Hall
This Facility succeeded the Alexandria Hospital which was established
in April lQl9, under the U. S. Public Health Service, and was used pri— J
marily for tubercular patients. In 1921, the Alexandria Hospital was y _
placed under the U. S. Veterans' Bureau. In key 1928 all the buildings
were demolished and were replaced by sixteen new buildings which were
completed in l@2Q, and the hospital was reopened on December 2nd. Upon y
the establishment of the Veterans* Administration in June l©50, the
hospital was transferred to this Administration as the Alexandria or
Pineville Facility. ,
The records have been arranged by the divisional organization of the
Facility. Records are complete for the period since 1029. There are
reny records of the Algiers Hospital and the Alexandria Hospital Clinic
dated 1Q2l — 1929, American Red Cross records dated IC26 - lQ5l, and
X—ray negatives dated 1QlQ — l©20. Useless papers are destroyed by per—
mission from Washington headquarters. Records of closed cases and orig-
inal personnel records of employees holding centralized positions are in
Washington. All other records are retained.
X-ray negatives of patients are not included in this Inventory.
There were, at the time of survey, 85,209 of these negatives in the A
File Room of Bldg. B, awaiting destruction. j _
Old files of this Facility are in storage at the Perry Point, Md.,
Supply Depot. See the Inventory of the Veterans* Administration in p`
lhryland for a description of them. I v_
