- Biography / History
- The Llewellyn family patriarch is James Franklin Llewellyn (1847-1927), a woodworker. He married Alice Belle Hutchinson (1847-1920) in 1868, and together the couple had six children: William Bennett (1869-1950), Mary Alice (1871-1965), George Barnett (1874-1946), Annie Belle (1878-1950), Nannie Kibbie (1881-1886), and Charles Robert (1885-1938).
- Mary Llewellyn married truck driver Dave Warth (1870-1936) in 1920, and Annie Llewellyn married confectionery shop owner Alexander Joseph Walker (1869-1940) sometime between 1900 and 1910.
- American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
- Scope and Content
- The Llewellyn family papers collection (dated 1884-1937, undated; 0.08 cubic feet; 3 folders) comprises letters and legal papers that document the Llewellyn family in Missouri and Kentucky during the beginning of the twentieth century. The letters in the collection are primarily sent to Mary and Annie Llewellyn from friends and family, and they discuss the health of relatives and in-laws, farming, social events, consumption, and the sale of various stocks. The legal papers are primarily on funeral costs and the purchase of burial plots, however, there is a genealogy list of the Llewellyn family, the last will and testament of William Hutchinson, and a marriage certificate for Mary Llewellyn and Dave Warth.
- The Llewellyn family papers are part of the Wade Hall Collection of American letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
