Biography / History
Founded in 1906, the Kentucky Nurses Association (KNA) is the professional organization for nurses in Kentucky. The organization promotes and advocates for the role of nurses in healthcare as well as for quality patient care. District 9, organized in the late 1980s, consists of Anderson, Boyle, Casey, Garrard, Lincoln, Marion, Mercer, Rockcastle, and Washington Counties.

The Kentucky Nurses Association District 9 records (dated 1953-2010, bulk 1980-2006; 4 cubic feet; 13 boxes; 2 MB and 30 digital files) consist of meeting minutes, scrapbooks, membership records, financial records, and conference materials documenting the Union's operation and advocacy work. A large portion of the records pertain to Kentucky State Association of Registered Nurses Educational Foundation, Inc., which operated as an educational fund for students pursuing nursing degrees.

Scope and Contents

The scrapbooks have been kept in original order, but deconstructed and removed from their original binders for preservation purposes. Scrapbook 1 contains photographs, newspaper articles, and materials recording the formation of District #9 of the Kentucky Nurses Association. This scrapbook also contains a letter signed by Oprah Winfrey, dated November 1, 1989. Scrapbook 2 contains photographs, newspaper articles, and materials regarding the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center's union election.
