Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- The State Normal School for Colored Persons was chartered in 1886, opened in 1887, and became a land grant school in 1890. The school was founded with a mission to train teachers for Kentucky's Negro schools. Students received free tuition if they promised to teach in Kentucky. The school changed its name multiple times: the Kentucky Normal and Industrial Institute for Colored Persons (1902); the Kentucky State Industrial College for Colored Persons (1926); and the Kentucky State College for Negroes (1938). In 1952 references to race were removed from the name and in 1973 the school became a university.
