GOVERNOR LOUIE B. NUNN, the Commonwealth' chief executive and chairman of the Board of Trustees, believes strongly that self-reliance, pride and courage are the by-products of intercollegiate athletics. His interest in Kentucky basketball was emphasized when he presented his first "Governor's Trophy" to Wildcat Coach Adolph Rupp. Gov. Nunn, 45, is a native of Barren County. He attended Bowling Green Business University, the University of Cincinnati and the University of Louisville, where he earned a law degree in 1950. He is an avid sportsman and spectator and a successful attorney who has served in both executive and judicial positions. The third Republican this century to be elected Governor in Kentucky, he formerly served as a county judge and city attorney.

PRESIDENT OTIS A. SINGLETARY came to Lexington from the University of Texas, Austin, where he was executive vice chancellor for academic affairs. Dr. Singletary, who is eighth president of the University, served a total of eight years at Texas, progressing during seven (1954-61) of those years from instructor to professor, associate dean of Arts and Sciences and assistant to the president. Then for five years (1961-66), he was chancellor of the University of North Carolina, although he was on leave from October 1964 to January 1966 to serve as director of the Job Corps, Office of Economic Opportunity.

ATHLETICS DIRECTOR HARRY C. LANCASTERMissing from the University of Kentucky basketball bench this season is the familiar figure of Harry C. Lancaster, who stepped up as athletic director late last season after being associated with Adolph Rupp since 1946. Lancaster remained as Rupp's chief assistant until last season's end and then left the coaching ranks to concentrate on the complex job of running the Wildcat athletics program. A native of Paris, he is a graduate of Georgetown College with a master's degree from the University of Kentucky. Kentucky's athletic program, a well-balanced and ambitious activity featuring intercollegiate competition in ten different sports, is organized under the Department of Athletics and a corporation known as the University of Kentucky Athletics Association.
The program is conducted without overemphasis or sacrifice of educational objectives and in strict compliance with the rules of the University, the Southeastern Conference and the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
A board of directors, headed by the President of the University in the capacity of chairman, maintains overall policy supervision of the athletic program. In addition to the UK President, board officials include the Vice-President for Student Affairs as vice-chairman and Dr. W. L. Matthews in the capacity of scretary. Fourteen other men drawn from the University faculty and the general public also serve on the board as appointees of the president as does a student representative.
Supervising the steady growth and balanced development of the athletic program is Director of Athletics Harry C. Lancaster.

Coach Adolph Rupp's Wildcats could be the most "charted" basketball team in the country.
At least, that's the evidence presented by the managers who chart practice sessions, the large array of statisticians who "work" home games and the daily checking of records and other statistics.
The Sports Information Office works basically from a giant master sheet which lists such information as the exact number of minutes and seconds each player sees action and the number of points and rebounds he scores in each game.
The time-in-action is kept at home games by a press worker and on the road by the UK sports information director or a volunteer. The SID also serves as "visiting" scorer on the road and keeps errors and assists at games where such statistics aren't recorded.
Kentucky keeps a full play-by-play of both freshman and varsity games in Memorial Coliseum. The recorder logs time of a basket, the player scoring, the type shot and the game score at the time. In case of a foul, the person committing the violation is also listed.
Wildcat statisticians naturally keep the routine rebounds, shots attempted, fouls, etc. They also log each call by an official and list each error by a player. Coach Rupp has an uncanny memory of game action and woe to the statistician who in a moment of weakness overlooks an error by a Wildcat.
One of the first chores of the SID office after tonight's game will be to bring the Wildcat statistics up-to-date and fill out a form to be airmailed immediately to the NCAA's statistics office in New York. The NCAA is interested only in scorers, rebounders and percentage shooters
who qualify in a certain high category. Dan Issel, Mike Pratt and Larry Steele have been listed in each report to date.
In addition, the NCAA wants full totals on Kentucky and opponents, the scores of games to date and any interesting comments or sidelights.
The next chore is to mimeograph statistics on Sunday and have them ready for distribution to the press-radio-tv corps Monday night.
After the Monday game, the process starts over again, except for the NCAA report, which is sent on Saturday night only.
There is also a matter of constantly checking the record book to see if the current Wildcats have shattered any old marks.
At present, they have tied a home floor game scoring record with 115 points against Kansas. The previous high totals were against Auburn (115-78) Jan. 29, 1966, and Xavier (115-77) Nov. 30, 1968. The previous high total of points against Kansas was 93.
A statistic worth watching at present is Dan Issel's climb in the all-time Wildcat scoring ranks.
He started the season with 1,190 points to rank 10th behind Bill Spivey (1,213), Frank Ramsey (1,344), Johnny Cox (1,461), Pat Riley (1,465), Cliff Hagan (1,475), Ralph Beard (1,517), Louie Dampier (1,575), Alex Groza (1,744) and Cotton Nash (1,770).
Issel's three-game total of 104 this season brings his over-all production to 1,294, passing Spivey and closing on Ramsey.
Mike Pratt, with a career total of 892, is within range of the coveted 1,000-point club.

The induction of Adolph Rupp into the Nai-smith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame last spring in Springfield, Mass., was fitting tribute to a man whose name is synonymous with college basketball.
Known as "Der Baron of Basketball," "The Man in a Brown Suit," and various other names of distinction, Rupp has reaped honor upon honor during 39 years as coach of the world famed Wildcat cage teams.
He is the undisputed winningest coach of all time with 810 victories against only 175 defeats and is one of basketball's most popular clinic and after-dinner speakers.
The name of Rupp, feared and respected in opponents' hearts and beloved by the millions who have witnessed the remarkable success of his Wildcat cage teams, has become synonymous with the game of basketball.
Such unprecedented recognition for the fabulous mentor is only natural since his success in the past 39 years as head man of the fabled Kentucky cage thoroughbreds has been nothing short of phenomenal. ASSISTANT COACH JOE B. HALLFormer Wildcat basketeer Joe B. Hall enters his fifth season on the staff of Coach Adolph Rupp and is destined to play a strong role in the Wildcat program, present and future. The 40-year-old native of Cynthiana took over the freshman team late last season when Harry C. Lancaster moved up to athletic director and began easing out of the coaching scene. In addition to the frosh, Hall inherits the position of good, strong right hand to Rupp, the world's winningest basketball coach. A successful coach for nine years prior to joining the Rupp staff in July, 1965, as coach, scout and recruiter, Hall transferred from Central Missouri State, where he spent the 1964-65 season as head coachposting a 19-6 record and gaining CMS's first MIAA Conference championship since 1951. Hall entered coaching following graduation from UK in 1955. He spent two years at Shephardsville High, achieving Coach of the Year honor in the Mid-Kentucky Conference in both 1957 and 1958. Moving into the collegiate field, he served one season as freshman coach and then five years as head coach at Regis College in Denver, Colo.

ASSISTANT COACH T. L. PLAINThe newest member of the Wildcat staff, Plain joined Coach Rupp in July and is no stranger to the UK scene, having served as a graduate assistant after leaving Kentucky Wesleyan College to work on an advance degree here in 1963-64. At Wesleyan, the 43-year-old Navy veteran compiled a 63-34 won-loss record while serving as athletic director, coach and associate professor of physical education from 1959-63. A native of Sacramento, Ky., he received his B.S. at Western Kentucky University and later attended Murray State, Indiana University and UK. He was athletic director, teacher and coach at Breckinridge County High from 1949-53; teacher, athletic director and coach at Henderson City High from 1953-57, and teacher and coach at Lincoln High in Vincennes, Ind., from 1957-59. Plain returned to Vincennes in 1964 as director of physical education for the Community School Corp. and basketball coach at Lincoln High. He left there in 1967 to become assistant basketball coach and assistant coordinator of the student teaching program at the University of Louisville.
ASSISTANT COACH DICK PARSONSA former Wildcat baseball All-America, Parsons had the distinction of serving as captain of both the UK basketball and baseball teams in 1961. He returned for post-graduate studies last winter and helped scout basketball foes. He joined UK as baseball coach in the summer and was added to Rupp's basketball staff with recruiting and scouting duties.
TRAINER CLAUDE VAUGHANNamed two years ago to the Wildcat staff was 35-year-old native Kentuckian Dr. Claude Vaughan, who took on the vital responsibilities of caring for the mental and physical health of UK players. Dr. Vaughan teaches economics, was born in Paris, Ky., and received all of his academic degrees from the University of Kentucky. HOOSIERS' SCORECARD
