- Frances Jewell McVey was born December 23, 1889, to Asa and Elizabeth Jewell in Harrison County, Kentucky. When she was a small child, the family (including brothers Robert and John) moved to Lexington, where Frances graduated from Sayre College before going to the Baldwin School in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. She received her Bachelor of Arts from Vassar College in 1913 and a Master of Arts degree from Columbia University in 1918. She was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Kentucky in 1940.
- Frances Jewell McVey held several positions at the University of Kentucky, beginning as a professor in the English Department from 1915-1921, then as the Dean of Women from 1921-1923. In 1923, she married then President of UK, Frank LeRond McVey, and is perhaps best known for her role as the "First Lady of Maxwell Place." The McVeys were the first President's family to reside in Maxwell Place and Frances Jewell McVey was widely praised for her graciousness as host of many teas and dinners. Her interest in, and recipes for, traditional Kentucky and Southern foods were well known and publicized, as was her knowledge of gardening.
- McVey was active in many organizations, including the Southern Association of College Women (of which she served as chair in 1918), which worked with the U.S. Food Administration during WWI; the YWCA; the USO; the University of Kentucky Woman's Club; AAUW (American Association of University Women); the Garden Club, and the Vassar Club (she was an alumnae member of the Board of Trustees from 1933-1939). She was often asked to give speeches at club meetings, as well as county section meetings of the Kentucky Homemakers Association.
- With a background in English literature, it is not surprising that Frances Jewell McVey was also a dedicated author. She wrote serial travel and history pieces, short fiction and essays, many of which were published in magazines of the time. She also published two books, The Literature of Shakerism and Uncle Will of Wildwood (co-authored with her brother, Robert). She also collected, edited and arranged the speeches of Frank LeRond McVey into University is a Place - a Spirit. Frances McVey was stepmother to Frank McVey's three children from his first marriage to Mabel McVey, Frank, Jr., Janet, and Virginia. She was diagnosed with cancer in the fall of 1944 and went to Ann Arbor, Michigan, for emergency surgery. She never fully recovered, and died June 13, 1945. She was interred at Lexington Cemetery.

- The Frances Jewell McVey papers (dated 1858-1953; 13.5 cubic feet; 38 boxes, 3 wrapped packages) include her personal and professional correspondence, manuscripts and research notes, diaries, address books, notebooks, documents, recipes, photographs, and scrapbooks. Also included are materials relating to Frank LeRond McVey, such as correspondence, speeches, notes, documents, and a scrapbook devoted to the memory of Frances Jewell McVey.
- These materials span most of the years of McVey's life, from 1898 to 1945, and document her childhood and adolescence in Lexington (Ky.); school experiences at the Baldwin School (Pa.), Vassar College (N.Y.) and Columbia University (N.Y.); her career as an English professor and Dean of Women at the University of Kentucky; her marriage to Frank McVey, including her role as the host of Maxwell Place (including extensive recipe files), vacations, joint projects, and family events; her involvement in clubs and organizations; and her extensive research and writing on a variety of topics. Correspondents include Thomas D. Clark, Sarah Bennet Holmes, Frank LeRond McVey, John Jacob Niles, Rena Niles, Eleanor Roosevelt, Katherine Pettit, and Governor A.B. "Happy" Chandler. Organizations represented in the collection include the International Relations Club at the University of Kentucky, the Lexington board of Education, the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA), and the American Association of University Women (AAUW). There are also materials generated after her death which relate to Frances McVey, including correspondence and information about a portrait dedication. Also included are photographs dating from the 1920s-1930s of Pine Mountain Settlement School, the Frontier Nursing Service, and Mary Breckinridge, most likely generated during McVey's research on these topics.

Included are letters from folksong-collector and writer, John Jacob Niles (early letters discuss his work with photographer Doris Ullman in Appalachia, and her death), and his wife Rena; letters concerning Eleanor Roosevelt’s visits to Maxwell Place in 1934 and 1938, including some letters written by Mrs. Roosevelt; correspondence relating to the modern "Flat-top House" the McVeys built after leaving Maxwell Place (including one from author Margaret Mitchell); a group of letters written to Elizabeth Jewell by Betty J. Comprises numerous handwritten manuscripts and typescripts, as well as notes made during writing. Although many of the manuscripts are undated, Frances Jewell McVey seems to have been writing and submitting material from an early age until the last year of her life. She wrote on a variety of topics, mostly non-fiction, including travel and leisure, history, culture, cooking, gardening, and women's issues. Materials are arranged topically, in original order where possible, and with dates noted when known.

McVey was very involved with UK activities from 1915, when she began teaching in the English department, through her time as Dean of Women (1921-1923), until husband, Frank, retired as university President in 1939. During that time, and particularly as "first lady" of Maxwell Place, she was inextricably involved in student, faculty, and outreach affairs. Many of the materials in this subseries document the many teas, dinners and other social events hosted at Maxwell Place. Lists of student organizations that were most likely used for tracking and planning student events are also included. Additionally, materials concerning the International Relations Club--a campus organization whose mission was to encourage education and understanding of other cultures--are contained within this subseries.

Frances McVey created and collected recipes and menus for the very practical purpose of planning events at Maxwell Place, as well as for articles she wrote about local food. The recipes largely fall into the "Southern cooking" category, particularly ones she collected or adapted for use in manuscripts on the subject (Of Sandwiches I Sing, What Dessert Shall We Have for Dinner?, Breads Today in Southern Kitchens, The Pride of Kentucky Food, etc.) There are also classic early 20th-century recipes for spreads, salads and hors d’oeuvres popular for entertaining, as well as practical World War II-era recipes which take rationing into account. Recipes are both in book form and loose.

Correspondence ranges from Frank McVey’s involvement with the Reform Club Sound Currency Committee, to his work as Director of Exhibits at the Twin City Exhibit in St. Louis (1904), and letters relating to job searches and offers of employment, including his position at UK. Much of the correspondence was generated while McVey was married to first wife, Mabel, and included is also a collection of letters written to Mabel by their children. Other materials include personal and professional correspondence, a group of letters relating to a book co-authored with Raymond Hughes in 1952, and letters addressed to or written by Harry Colpus (who apparently claimed to be the illegitimate son of King Edward VII of England), the significance of which is unknown.

Comprises several scrapbooks kept by McVey containing memorabilia, notes, letters, dance cards, photographs and clippings. The earliest (1906-1908) commemorates her Sayre Female Institute experiences in Lexington. The 1858-1909 (predominant, 1908-1909) scrapbook, contains materials from her time as a student at the Baldwin School, and also includes some pages at the back with family memorabilia, such as invitations from her parents' and grandparents' weddings. Two scrapbooks document vacations, while two others contain materials relating to the International Relations Club at UK, one of which is partially arranged, the other of which contains materials that were collected, but never arranged. Lastly, there is a memorial scrapbook in Frances McVey's honor, presented to Frank McVey in 1948 by Jacqueline Bull and Frances Smith Dugan.
