Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- The Henry Clay plant was one of several coal camps located in Lookout, Kentucky, an unincorporated community and coal town in Pike County, Kentucky. The Lookout coal camps operated at their height from 1908-1936, with the Henry Clay mine ceasing to operate by the early 1950s. This coal camp, and many others in Kentucky and the greater Appalacia region, supplied Allied Chemical and Dye Corporation, the leading chemical company in America at the time.
- Scope and Content
- The Henry Clay plant mining ledger (dated 1946-1947; 0.88 cubic feet; 1 item) consists of one 792-page ledger documenting the operation of the Henry Clay coal mine in Pike County, Kentucky. The records contain bi-weekly payrolls recording the total tons of coal mined, hours worked, and wages earned as well as a record of total earnings and deductions including medical, store, and tax.
