Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Richard Higgins, Jr., of Lexington, Kentucky, was a prominent farmer and merchant. He owned a plantation called "Castleton." Two of his children, Frank and Sally, from second wife Jane Nash Legrand Higgins, died in 1851.
- Scope and Content
- The Richard Higgins Jr. letterbook and livestock records contain two volumes of accounts documenting the lives and activities of the Higgins family and their plantation, "Castleton." The first volume is livestock and crop records for the plantation. The letterbook contains copies of letters and lists of letters written by Higgins. Also found in this volume are two essays, "Memorandum of events attending the deaths of our children Sally and Frank C. Higgins in 1851" and "Events attending the sickness and death of Jane N. Higgins."
