- John P. Morton of Lexington, Kentucky, worked as a clerk in the bookstore of W. W. Worsley. When Worsley moved his store to Louisville in 1825, Morton went with him, becoming manager of the store the following year. Between 1832 and 1838 the firm was known as Morton and Smith. It was during this time that the firm began publishing textbooks. Henry A. Griswold joined the firm in 1838. From 1838 the company was known as Morton and Griswold.
- Scope and Content
- These are the business records of John P. Morton and Company publishers of Louisville, Kentucky. During its history the firm was known as The Louisville Book Store (1822-1827), Morton and Company (1827-1831), Morton and Smith (1831-1838), and as Morton and Griswold (1838-1860). After 1860 the name was John P. Morton & Company. The company's records include ledgers, invoice books, letter books, business correspondence, credit books, and files on the Cincinnati, New Orleans and Texas Pacific Railroad (1903- 1905), and the Louisville and Nashville Railroad (1916). These business records are part of the Country Store Records.
