Collection Overview

Biography / History
Dr. Melba Porter Hay published Madeline McDowell Breckinridge and the Battle for a New South, the University Press of Kentucky, in 2009. The biography draws heavily on the research that Hay completed for her 1980 University of Kentucky dissertation in history, Madeline McDowell Breckinridge: Kentucky Suffragist and Progressive Reformer. Hay did much of her research on Breckinridge while working on her original dissertation. She decided to use her original research, along with additional and updated research to continue her biographical work on Breckinridge circa 2005. Additionally, Hay served as the Kentucky Historical Society Division Manager of Research and Publications. She has written and edited articles, collections, and books regarding Kentucky history.
Madeline "Madge" McDowell Breckinridge (1867-1920), great-granddaughter of Henry Clay, was born into the prominent Kentucky family, the McDowells. She later married newspaper editor Desha Breckinridge, a member of the prominent Breckinridge family. Breckinridge was an active suffragist and Progressive until her death in 1920. She advocated for many social issues, including suffrage, public education, and the treatment of tuberculosis patients.
