Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Chloe Gifford was born in Robertson County, Kentucky, May 21, 1900. She was the first woman graduate of the UK College of Law and passed the state bar examination at the age of 21. She then went on to get her A.B. undergraduate degree in Education in 1924, and received her M.A. in Education in 1944, both from the University of Kentucky. She then taught at Sayre School and became Dean of Women.
- Her service to UK began in 1940 as Director of Community Services. She implemented a new concept at the University-planning, developing and implementing programs for various organizations throughout the Commonwealth. She retired after 30 years of service.
- From 1958 to 1960, she was President of the General Federation of Women's Clubs with members in more than 60 countries. During this time she made eleven round trips across the Atlantic and a trip around the world. She was acquainted with world leaders including Chancellor Willy Brandt of West Germany, Prime Minister Nehru of India, and President Charles de Gaulle of France. She said that getting to know Mrs. Franklin Delano (Eleanor) Roosevelt was "my pride and joy."
- Her legacy to the University includes a bequest to fund research at the UK Albert B. Chandler Medical Center. Made in memory of her parents, John and Lyda Gifford, the bequest provides funds for stroke and cancer research as well as the study of renal failure and transplant research.
- Her programs of community improvement and organization of voluntary services gained international acclaim. She traveled extensively in Europe, Southeast Asia and the Far East at the invitation of governments eager to introduce her concept of self-help.
- She was a UK Fellow, a Life Member of the UK National Alumni Association, a Century Club Member and retired Staff Director of Special Activities.
- Chloe Gifford was named to the Hall of Distinguished Alumni on April 11, 1980. She died on June 2, 1982.

- The Chloe Gifford papers contain one box from 1943-1957 of publications used by Ms. Gifford in her University Extension classes. Beauty and Grooming contain pamphlets, bulletins, flyers, and posters relating to basic beauty and health care for both men and women, from children to adult. Juvenile Delinquency contains booklets, articles, and pamphlets related to raising youth and troubled youth. Sewing and Clothing contains instructional and informative pamphlets and booklets. Women and Finance contains pamphlets, booklets, brochures, and books on household economy, budget-making, and informative information.
