Collection Overview

Biography / History
Margaret Wickliffe Preston Johnston (1885-1964) was a descendant and a relative by marriage to three prominent families in the history of Kentucky: the Prestons, the Johnstons, and the McDowells. Her paternal grandfather was Confederate Major General William C. Preston (1816-1887) and her paternal grandmother was Margaret Preston Wickliffe (1819-1898), the daughter of Robert Wickliffe (1775-1859), lawyer and wealthy land-owner in Lexington, Kentucky. Margaret Wickliffe Preston Johnston's mother was Sarah Benton Brant McDowell Preston (1853-1923), descendant of U.S. Senator Thomas Hart Benton (1782-1858). Sarah spent her formative years in Europe, where she met her husband, Robert Wickliffe Preston (1850-1914).
Margaret Wickliffe Preston Johnston graduated from Bryn Mawr College in 1908 and married Philip Preston Johnston, Jr. (1877-1937), a distant cousin, after a brief courtship. They had two sons, Philip Preston Johnston III (1918-1964) and Robert Wickliffe Preston Johnston (1920-2003). Margaret Wickliffe Preston Johnston was very active in the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and maintained extensive correspondence with her large, extended family.
Scope and Content
The Preston-Johnston family photographs, 1860-1952 consist of 650 period photographs of various formats depicting the ancestors, immediate relatives, and acquaintances of Margaret Wickliffe Preston Johnston (1885-1964). Important sections of the collection include three photographic albums assembled by Margaret Wickliffe Preston Johnston's mother, Sarah Benton Brant McDowell (1853-1923), and her aunts, Susan McDowell (?-1873) and Mary McDowell (?-1875). The albums pertain to the time following the Civil War that the family lived in Europe. Other material is from Margaret Wickliffe Preston Johnston's father's family, the Prestons of Lexington, Kentucky. Material related to her mother's relatives, the Brant and Benton families is also present, as well as photographs from a Preston family offshoot, the Draper Family of Massachusetts.

Album 3

Scope and Contents note

Cartes de visite and cabinet card album containing 36 images. The front cover has a raised relief with the initials "S McD," which along with other internal evidence suggests that it belonged to Sarah Benton Brant McDowell (1853-1923). It is known that she was called "Sallie" by friends and family and the image dedications are all to "Sallie." It is also the only album to feature an image of Robert Wickliffe Preston, Sarah McDowell's husband.
