Collection Overview

Biography / History
Joe Speed Jordan was born in Fayette County in 1902 and died in Lexington in 1965. Joe Jordan worked for the Leader newspaper as a journalist from 1922 until shortly after the outbreak of World War II. During the war he served as a lieutenant for the Navy. After the war he returned to the Leader and wrote a very popular local humor column called "Four Bits". He was also a beat journalist for the newspaper. After he retired from the Leader he focused on in depth research for a book on the famous abolitionist, Cassius M. Clay. In 1960 he became the executive coordinator for the Kentucky Civil War Commission. Until his death he wrote a column sponsored by the commission that appeared in newspapers throughout the state called "100 Years Ago This Week".
Scope and Content
The Kentucky Civil War Commission press releases (dated 1961-1965; 0.23 cubic feet; 1 box) includes the manuscripts for a weekly newspaper column by the executive coordinator of the commission, Joe Speed Jordan. The column was called "100 Years Ago This Week" and was a historical review of the Civil War day by day in Kentucky. The collection includes each manuscript of the column from 1961 until 1965.
