Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Thelma "Polly" Hall Parrott Hollingsworth (June 9, 1898-November 23, 1980) Leslie Hollingsworth, nom de plume. A poet, playwright, clubwoman, educator and thoroughbred breeder and owner, Thelma "Polly" Parrott Hollingsworth contributed much to the community of Lexington, Kentucky. Her literary works including a book of poetry, American Pictures in 1940 and a play Silent Night in 1941 were published under her pseudonym of "Leslie Hollingsworth." Several plays were produced on radio and television. Her papers contain manuscripts for many other plays and poems; and, the play program and musical score for Out of the Blue, a musical starring Lucille Caudill Little in August 1945 for the American Legion of Kentucky and presented in the old Guignol Theater. She produced an Easter pageant that was performed at Memorial Coliseum for all of Lexington to attend. Her mother was Blanche Hall of Mount Clemons, Michigan, and her father, Lewis "Chummy" M. Parrott was a teacher. They moved to St. Louis for her father to teach at McKinley High School then Roosevelt High School. She attended Missouri University, University of Illinois, and the University of Wisconsin. She married Denzil Maurice Hollingsworth (February 5, 1899- April 17, 1968) on April 17, 1922. Denzil, a civil engineer, managed an excavating company while they lived at 4211 Flora Place in St. Louis together with Blanche and "Chum." Upon the profits from success of an oil company, Thelma and Denzil moved to "The Hollys," a thoroughbred horse farm on Newtown Pike in Scott County, Kentucky in 1932; and, when "Chum" retired from teaching, he and Blanche moved back to her parents' home at 142 Cass Avenue in Mt. Clemons, Michigan. In Kentucky, the Hollingsworths participated in the growth of the thoroughbred industry as well as in the new community theatricals and music as post-war Lexington grew.
- Thelma Hollingsworth was an active member of the Republican Party and the Daughters of the American Revolution in Kentucky. Toward the end of her life, she was a member of the Mount Horeb Presbyterian Church (where her son Donn preached), the Keeneland Club, Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association, Midwest Museum Association and the Midwest Hunt and Steeplechase Association. She taught at Sayre School as a primary teacher in the 1960s. Hollingsworth's papers include some information about their children who attended schools in St. Louis then University High in Lexington. The three eldest sons served in the U.S. Army and graduated from the University of Kentucky. The daughter graduated from Sophie Newcomb College and youngest son from Yale University. All were able athletes and talented equestrians:
- 1. Donn Denzil Hollingsworth (October 30, 1923-February 14, 1996) m. Leslie Toll of Lawrenceburg then Anne Spence – English teacher at Lafayette High School and in July 1961 appointed headmaster at Sayre School, Lexington
- 2. L. Hall Hollingsworth (Jan. 14, 1925-March 4, 1996) m. Martha Rebecca Bryan of Georgetown – construction contractor and builder in Lexington
- 3. Dorcas Noel Hollingsworth Wiedemann (December 28, 1926-November 26, 2015) m. Jefferson Allen Wiedemann of Lexington – farmer
- 4. Kent Parrott Hollingsworth, J.D. (August 21, 1929-May 26, 1999) m. Betty Boggess of Tazewell VA then Missy Constant – publisher/editor Blood-Horse Thoroughbred Racing Magazine and lecturer at University of Louisville
- 5. D. Vertrees Hollingsworth, M.D. (July 10, 1937-February 14, 2012) m. Alice Broadbent of Cadiz – Family Physician in Scott County, Ky. and Commanding Officer at three U.S. Navy medical treatment facilities.

- Scope and Content
- The Thelma "Polly" Hall Parrott Hollingsworth papers (dated 1844-2008, undated; 51 boxes, 2 folders; 29.45 cubic feet) comprise the family papers, beginning in the mid nineteenth century, of her grandparents, parents, husband, children, and their spouses: Hall, Parrott, Hollingsworth, Wiedemann, and Boggess. The largest portion of the collection comprises Polly's own papers, including her play scripts and manuscripts, correspondence, genealogical research, and activity and meeting sheets from her time as a Girl Scout leader in the 1930s. Other significant portions include the diaries, letters, and property records of Polly's family in Mount Clemens, Michigan. Her parent's papers include invoices, property deeds, and teaching ephemera from St. Louis, Missouri. Her husband's papers include many business records for his excavating company, invention of parts for oil drills, and investment in oil wells throughout southern Illinois and Indiana. All of Polly's children have papers in the collection, but a large portion includes the letters, awards, teaching, and equine writings of her son, Kent, and his wife, Betty Boggess. Also included are the letters and genealogical research by her daughter, Dorcas, and the business records of her husband, Jefferson Wiedemann. Of significance is a collection of more than 1,500 photographs and negatives of family members, horses, and events. Notably are recordings by Thelma and Denzil, including audio and film, as well as keepsakes like St. Louis Browns Baseball team hats from the 1930s to the 1950s.

Scope and Contents
The Audiovisual and realia series, 1879-2008, comprises many photographs, negatives, and slides of many Boggess, Hall, and Hollingsworth family members. There are two vinyl records, one of a song written by Thelma and musician Kay Dickey and the other one of Thelma narrating a horse race in 1968. The DVD is a recording of Louis Hall Hollingsworth in 1988 giving commentary while watching old 8mm film recordings by Thelma and Denzil during the 1930's through to the 1960's. The realia portion of the series contains a wide variety of items collected by the Hollingsworth family over the years, like 1920's-1950's St. Louis Browns baseball hats, certificates, trophies, scrapbooks, embossing stamps, and artwork.

Biographical note
The Hall family series includes the papers of descendants from Dr. Ebenezer Wright Hall (1783-1865) and Olivia Rich (1812-1881). The family were early settlers of Mount Clemens, MaComb County, Michigan, a northeast suburb of Detroit. Dr. Hall established a glass factory for manufacturing medical vials and bottles. As early settlers of Mount Clemens, the Hall family owned a significant portion of properties in the city. The doctor's brother, William Ebenezer Hall, a glass cutter, with his wife, Letitia Jenny Shook, helped manage Hall Bath House, a mineral spa and hotel. The couple had two daughters, Nelle Belle, a school teacher, and Blanche Hall Parrott. Their daughters helped manage the hotel property into the early twentieth century. Blanche's daughter, Thelma Hall Parrott Hollingsworth, was integral to the closing and selling of the Hall estate property in the late 1950's.

Biographical note
Denzil Maurice Hollingsworth was born in 1900 to Ethelbert and Bertha Piel Hollingsworth in Allison Prairie, Illinois. After serving the United States Army during World War I, Denzil earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Illinois-Urbana/Champaign. While at university, he met another student, Thelma Polly Parrott, and the couple were wed in the Spring of 1921. Denzil and Polly lived at 4211 Flora Place, St. Louis, Missouri, and Polly gave birth to five children: Donn Denzil, Louis Hall, Kent, Dorcas, and Vertrees. Denzil worked as a contractor for his own excavating company and won contracts to begin work for many St. Louis City landmarks like the Kiel Opera House, Malcolm Bliss Hospital, and Kennard School. Denzil also designed mechanisms for oil well drills and invested in wells throughout southern Indiana, Illinois, and various other locations throughout the country. In the late 1930s, Denzil and Thelma followed their dream for race horsing and moved to a farm, originally owned by founders of Keeneland Horse Race Course, Louis and Harriet Beard, in Georgetown, Kentucky. They named the farm "The Holly's" and raised several champion thoroughbreds there. Denzil died of a sudden heart attack on April 19, 1968.

Thelma "Polly" Parrott Hollingsworth, 1921-1980, undated
Biographical note
Thelma "Polly" Hall Parrott Hollingsworth was born in 1899 to Lewis Merton and Blanche Hall Parrott in Mount Clemens, Macomb County, Michigan on June 9, 1898. At a young age Thelma moved with her parents to St. Louis, Missouri. While studying at the University of Illinois-Champaign she met Denzil Hollingsworth, married him in May of 1922, and settled in St. Louis at 4211 Flora Place. Thelma and Denzil had five children: Donn Denzil, Louis Hall, Dorcas Noel, Kent Parrott, and D. Vertrees. During the 1930's, Thelma was active as a troop leader for Brownie Pack 90, Girl Scout Association of St. Louis. As leader she wrote songs, plays, and stories for the Brown Owls and Brownies. Thelma shared a love of horses with her husband and children and influenced the family to buy a horse farm in Georgetown, Scott County, Kentucky on Newtown Road and named it The Holly's. After the move, Thelma continued to write music, plays, and manuscripts, but for a broader audience. Some of her works were performed at the University of Kentucky's Guignol Theatre in the 1940s and 1950's. She wrote many Christmas plays for her family and church. Thelma was a member of Mt. Horeb Presbyterian Church in Lexington and of many other organizations like Daughters of American Revolution, Keeneland Association, Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Club, and Midwest Museums. Thelma died, aged 82, November 1980, at a hospital in Georgetown, Kentucky.

The Leslie Hollingsworth series contains typed loose-leaf manuscripts of works authored by Thelma under her pen name, Leslie Hollingsworth; such as radioplays Lincoln the Youth and Out of the Blue. Dorcas Noel Hollingsworth and Jefferson Allen Wiedemann, 1916-2003, undated
Biographical note
Dorcas Noel Hollingsworth Wiedemann was born on December 28, 1926 to Thelma and Denzil Hollingsworth in Saint Louis, Missouri. She was the only daughter with four brothers. The family moved to central Kentucky in 1936, where Dorcas, with her brother Kent, could ride horses. She attended school at the University of Kentucky and the H. Sophie Newcomb Memorial College, in New Orleans, Louisiana. After college she moved to New York City to pursue a career as a photographer. She returned to Kentucky and worked as a portrait photographer at Purcell's Department Store. While working she met the son of the owners of Purcell's, Jefferson Wiedemann and the couple wed in 1950. They had five children: Jefferson Mark, Randal, Holly, Britton, and Hope. Jefferson Allen Wiedemann was the great-grandson of George Wiedemann, founder of the Cincinnati brewery, and was the grandson of the J.D. Purcell, founder of the only Lexington downtown department store. Jefferson started his own companies in coal brokerage and marketing. He also invested in many of his father-in-law's oil wells and other ventures. Dorcas and Jefferson lived at Holly's Farm in Georgetown, Kentucky until their deaths in 1986 (Jefferson) and 2015 (Dorcas).
Scope and Contents
The Dorcas Noel Hollingsworth and Jefferson Allen Wiedemann, 1916-2003, undated, series contains correspondence, business records, newspaper clippings, and scrapbooks created or received by Dorcas, Jefferson, or their family. The series includes organizational records and genealogical research for the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) by Dorcas. A large portion of the correspondence were love letters sent to Dorcas by soldiers during World War II, before her marriage to Jefferson in 1950. Business records reflect Jefferson's investments in oil with and after the death of his father-in-law, Denzil Hollingsworth.
