Collection Overview

Biography / History
Samuel MacKay Wilson was born, October 15, 1871, to Mary Bell and Reverend Samuel Ramsay Wilson, in Louisville. His grandfather, Joshua Lacy Wilson and father were Presbyterian ministers. Wilson's primary education was taught by his father before he entered Centre College Academy preparatory school, and then matriculated to a freshman of Centre College as a freshman in 1888. In his junior year, Wilson began teaching and continued to for a few years before returning to Centre College to study law. He apprenticed under Judge Jere R. Morton in Lexington and was admitted to the Fayette County Bar on October 14, 1895. Wilson married Mary Bullock Shelby, the great granddaughter of Kentucky's first governor, Isaac Shelby on October 26, 1899. During the first World War, Wilson served as judge advocate alongside troops in France from 1917-1919. He suffered injury from a fragment air bomb and was discharged with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. During his career he practiced law alone and in partnerships. His longest lasting partnership was with law associate Mr. Harbison. Notably Wilson aided the United States Supreme Court boundary cases between Missouri and Kansas states. He also defended the constitutionality of Library Laws for small cities throughout Kentucky. Samuel M. Wilson taught law at Transylvania University and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1924. In addition to law, Wilson was very active in civic leadership. He served on the Trustee and Treasurer for Lexington Public Library, and Vice President of Lexington's Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of organizations like the Odd Fellows, Fraternities, American Legion, Reserve Officers mess of Central Kentucky, Pendennis Club Louisville, and many more. He remained active and served as an elder in the Presbyterian Church throughout his life. Wilson was also very interested in regional history and was a member of many historical societies including the Filson Club, Kentucky Historical Society, Mississippi Valley, Ohio Valley, John Bradford Society, National Society of Colonial Wars, Sons of the American Revolution, etc. He died from an infection after surgery at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis on October 10, 1946.
