Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Logan E. English (1928-1982) was born in Paris, Kentucky, the son of Logan Berry and Corrilla Eberhardt English. He spent most of his childhood at Wyndhurst, the family farm in Bourbon County, Kentucky. He attended the Millersburg Military Academy in Millersburg, Kentucky. He received his bachelor’s degree from Georgetown College in 1951 and received a Master's in Fine Arts from the Yale Drama School in 1956. Following graduation from Yale in 1956, Logan E. English began his career as a professional folk singer. A meeting with Woody Guthrie at a party in Greenwich Village, New York, had a strong influence on English's career, and he is remembered as the major interpreter of Guthrie's work. During his career, he recorded six albums, including Logan English Sings the Woody Guthrie Songbag.
- Fredrick W. Eberhardt (1864-1951), Logan E. English's maternal grandfather, was a Baptist minister in Kentucky. He was also a published author and was considered an authority on classic literature and music.
- Logan B. English (1882-1962), father of Logan E. English, was a Baptist minister, a prominent civic leader, and a farmer. Corrilla Eberhardt English as an opera singer before her marriage to Logan B. English.
- Scope and Content
- The English family papers (dated 1873-1983, undated; 12.2 cubic feet; 31 boxes) consist of correspondence, diaries, poetry, plays, sermons, account books, songs, audiocassettes, grooved audio discs, and photographs, which document several generations of Baptist ministers and writers in Paris and Henderson, Ky. The papers primarily document the work of poet, folk singer, actor, and playwright Logan Eberhardt English and contain many of his original songs and poems. English's papers contain drafts of his unfinished play based on the life of Cassius Clay (Box 12-13) and a copy of his notable album Logan English Sings the Woody Guthrie Songbag (Box 29, Item 6). Additionally, the papers contain materials generated by English's father Logan B. English, a baptist minister; his maternal grandfather, poet Frederick W. Eberhardt; and the LaRue family of Bourbon County, related to English through his mother. Notably, the LaRue family materials consist of account books relating to hemp farming in the late 19th century. The papers also contain several programs from literature societies in Paris and Henderson where Eberhardt and Logan B. English read their works in the late 19th century and early 20th century.
