Vol. XCiv No. 322

By Brian Bennett
Senior Staff Writer

Long lines, few class options and
frustration likely will greet students
attending Add/Drop this week.
Budget cuts have forced a reduction
in the iiiunber of classes being of-
fered and the number of people
manning Add/Drop stations.

The University will not offer 120
classes in which fewer than five
students had enrolled for this se-
mester. Additionally. between 65
and 70 sections of other classes
were cut. said Robert ileinenway.
chancellor for the Lexington (‘am-
pus.

The $11.5 million reduction in
the state appropriation to th‘s
1992—93 budget followed a $15.2
million budget reduction in the
1901-02 budget.

ilemenway said the cuts mean
students will have fewer options
when chosing classes.

"Where before you might have
had a fairly broad range of courses
that you could take. now you‘re go-
ing to have much less opportunity
to pick and choose." llemenway
said.

Because of staff reductions, few-
er advisers will be working more
hours at Add/Drop. The reduced
staffing coupled with the number of
students forced to change their
schedules because of the class can-
cellations has caused administrators
to predict longer Add/Drop lines
than usual.

“i think there will be some longer
lines." llemenway said. ”I don‘t
think it will be disastrous."

For frustrated students who stand
in seemingly stagnant lines and
ctm't get the classes they want at
Add/Drop. University Registrar
Randall Dahl said patience will be a
necessity.

“I hope everyone understands the
situation the University has, and I
hope they'll exhibit the kind of pa-
tience that will help everyone mini-
mize the adverse impact." Dahl
said.

llemenway said courses required
for the University Studies Program
or for graduation have been pre-
served.

“Students will be able to get the
University Studies courses that they
need to proceed towards gradua-
tion. That's been our priority." He-
inenway said. “They won’t have as

Established 1894

many options as they did in the
past. but I don’t think there will be
my student that will be impeded in
their progress toward their degree."

Limits on the number of students
in some classes have been raised to
make room for students who were
enrolled in the canceled sections.
Dahl said. Only a few students are
being added to classes. but the lil-
crease could have an impact on the
quality of instruction, he said.

"The number of undergraduate
class increases is relatively small
but potentially significant." Dan!
said.

Univereity of Kentucky. Lexington. Kentucky

Fall Add/Drop offers long lines,

Dahl said the process of cancel-
ing and adding classes is continuing
daily. He said low—enrollment. spe—
cial-interest courses are somewhat
“vulnerable." Departments have
been quicker this year to drop class-
es with small enrollments. he said.

Dahl said students enrolled in a
class that was canceled by Aug. 14
were notified by letter. Students
should check the class listings in
this issue of the Kentucky Kernel
for my later cancellations. He said
it is rare that a class would be can-
celled aiter Add/l mm.

in addition to cancellations

caused by low enrollment. some
courses have been dropped because
there is no one to teach them.
About 75 vacant faculty positions
will not be filled because of a fur
ing freeze. lleinenway said.

He said the loss of so many ia-
culty members could hurt the quali~
ty of education offered by the lilil<
versity

"'l‘hose are 75 people who liaic
expertise that is not ayailable to the
students of the l'iiiieisity.“ lie
menway said.

Tips make process less frustrating

Staff reports

As tanned UK students retuni
from a leisurely summer of sun and
surf. the long lines and frustration
of the most confusing University
processes lie in wait for them.

Add/Drop begins at 8 am. to-
morrow —— but not for everyone.
From 8 to 10 am. graduate stu-
dents and seniors may begin the
Add/Drop process. Freshmen join
them from 10 am. to noon; juniors,
from 1 to 3 pm; sophomores, frotn
3 pm. to 5 pm; and non-degree
students. from 5 to 6 pm.

Students who cannot begin at the
appropriate time must report later.
No one will be allowed to begin
Add/Drop before the time assigned
to his classification.

For Add/Drop, students should
report to the same site where they
registered for classes.

Tomorrow morning. Add/Drop
for students who registered for
classes in Patterson Office Tower
will begin in White Hall Classroom
Building.

After 5 p.m.. the check-in station
will be in the office tower.

Add/Drop continues on a first-
come. first-served basis through
Sept. l.

To be eligible for Add/Drop. a
student must have registered before
Aug. 20 and must have paid the
$50 advance fee.

And the student‘s record must
not have any “stops" — like unpaid
tuition. library fines or Wildcat
Calling phone bills.

Students who registered for
classes Aug. 20-24 may add addi-
tional classes beginning tomorrow.

Tips ‘ .

These students may not add
classes Aug. 25.

Officials suggest that students
take a pen or pencil. a schedule
book turd this issue of the Ken-
tucky Keniel to the Add/Drop site
to make the process a little easier.

Students must fill out Add/Drop
worksheets before entering the
line. Worksheets are available at
all Add/Drop locations and in col-
lege deans‘ offices.

The worksheet must be filled out
completely and correctly. If it is
not the student must return to the
end of the line.

Once seated at computer tenni-
nals. students should add classes
before dropping the ones they al-
ready have. Frequently. students

\

drop classes then attempt to add
them again a few minutes later —
only to find the classes have been
filled.

After students leave the tenni-
nals. they should pick tip the coin—
pute print outs of their new sched-
ules. checking them carefully to
make sure all of their changes
have been made.

if they requested audit or pass/
fail grading options. students
should check to make sure those
options appear on their new sched-
ules.

if the computer operator made
any errors. the student should re-
turn to the operator immediately.

Students should keep their new
schedules as proof of their Add/
Drop transactions.

...L

Students who don't get the class-
es they want on the first try should
return to the Add/Drop location lat-
er for another attempt. officials
said.

Students who only need to drop
classes may go through the drop-
only line in the classroom building.

However. if a student wants to
withdraw from all his classes. he
must go to l0 Funkhouser Build-
ing.

Students who need to add and
drop should not enter the drop-only
service area.

Students who misplace their
printed schedules may obtain dupli-
cate schedules in 10 Funkhouser
Building fmm 8 am. to 4:30 pm.
