- Biography / History
- Robert Murphy Mayo (1836-1896) was born in Hague, Virginia to Robert Mayo and Emily Ann Campbell. In 1858, he graduated from Virginia Military Institute and went on to teach mathematics at Mount Pleasant Military Academy in New York and later at his alma mater. While he taught at Virginia Military Institute, he studied at Lexington Law School (now Washington and Lee University School of Law) in 1858 and 1859 and was admitted to the bar. In 1861, Mayo enlisted in the Confederate States Army as a major and worked to organize the 47th Virginia Infantry, and served until the end of the war in 1865. He returned to his legal practice in Westmoreland County after the Civil War and was elected as their county's attorney. In 1881, he was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates in a part-time position; in 1883, he was elected to the US House of Representatives to represent Virginia's first district and served to March 1884; and finally returned to the Virginia House of Delegates, serving from 1885 to 1889. Robert married Lucy Claybrock (1840-1901) in 1867, and together the couple had four children: Nellie (b. 1869), Charlotte (b. 1871), Richard (1872-1911), and Archibald (1882-1963).
- American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
- Scope and Content
- The Robert M. Mayo papers (dated 1888; 0.01 cubic feet; 1 folder) comprises one letter and one receipt that document the political career of Robert M. Mayo in Hague, Virginia in the late nineteenth century. The letter is to a friend, discussing their power of attorney agreement and the state of politics in Virginia. The receipt is for the acceptance by the Augusta County Clerk of the power of attorney agreement between Robert Mayo and his attorney as Mayo vies to become the Clerk for the Staunton, Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals.
- The Robert M. Mayo papers collection is part of the Wade Hall Collection of American Letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
