Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Frances Cox West (1892-1974) was born in Tennessee to Dr. James B. Cox (1857-1933) and Ella Frances McCall (1868-1956). She was the oldest of three children, Henry McCall Cox (1894-1953) and Mary Priestly Cox (1905-1993). Both Frances's father and brother were practicing physicians in Tennessee. In October of 1919, Frances married Augustus S. West (1893-1961). Together they had one child, a daughter, Frances Cox West (1931-1995). Between 1920 and 1930, the couple moved from Tennessee to Louisville, Kentucky where Augustus began working as vice president of the Southern Trust Company.
- American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
- Scope and Content
- The West family papers (dated 1904-1989, undated; 5.02 cubic feet; 11 boxes, 1 photograph box) comprise letters, journals, and pamphlets that document the West and Cox families in Kentucky and Tennessee throughout the twentieth century. The letters are primarily from Frances's mother, Ella Cox, and discuss the failing health of Frances's father, the lives of Frances's siblings, issues with cooks and housekeepers, the outbreak of sickness, and the effects of the Great Depression on their lives and town. There are also letters from her sister Mary Priestly that discuss her three children and their health and how the Depression did not affect them greatly. Henry, Frances' brother, writes of life at medical school and taking care of their mother Ella Cox towards the end of her life. Frances' husband, Augustus, writes her often and discusses his job, the health of family members, and the people he encounters during his trips for work as Vice President of the Southern Trust Company. Frances and Augustus had one daughter also named Frances who writes about her time at the University of Kentucky. In 1948, Frances and her daughter go on a trip to the West Coast and received many letters from Augustus and friends. There is a significant amount of professional correspondence, receipts, and an account book of Augustus West. Additionally, there are a few newspaper clippings about extended relatives, pamphlets on various topics, and a ticket from a 1948 University of Kentucky basketball game versus Tulane.
- The West family papers are part of the Wade Hall Collection of American letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
