- Attorney, historian. Wilson, a native of Louisville, Ky, studied law at Centre College, Danville, Ky. and in the office of Judge Jere R. Morton and then became a prominent lawyer in Lexington, Ky. He was known for interests in social issues and in history, particularly for his work with the Lexington Public Library and the Kentucky Historical Society. He collected books and manuscripts, and founded the "Cakes and Ale Club" in Lexington, which consisted of a group of men who shared Wilson's interests in books and book collecting. Wilson bequeathed his large collection of books and manuscripts to the University of Kentucky library.
- Scope and Content
- The material includes correspondence between Judge Samuel M. Wilson and Frank L. McVey, President of the University of Kentucky (1917-1940), concerning an annual award, sponsored by Wilson, for the best student book collection. Also present are several entries submitted for the contest including the lists of books of each of the collections. The winners from selected years are noted on some of the entries. Thank you notes from several of the winners to Judge Wilson are present, including one from the 1937 winner, Elizabeth Hardwick, who later became a noted author and literary critic.
