Cleanth Brooks, a teacher and critic whose influence on American
literature has been compared to that of Edmund Wilson and Van
Wyck Brooks, will be guest speaker at the annual dinner of the
University of Kentucky Library Associates on 30 March 1978. The
, meeting is open to the public and will be held at Spindletop Hall,
Lexington. A reception for Mr. Brooks will begin at 6:15 and

{received an honorary doctorate from the University of Kentucky.
Brooks is the author of more than a dozen books of criticism,
including Modern Poetry and Tradition (1939), American Literature:
the Makers and the Making (1973), and Understanding Poetry (1938;
reprinted 1975). The last two were written in collaboration with
Robert Penn Warren, with whom Brooks has been associated for much
. of his professional and personal life. Brooks and Warren co-
* edited the influential Southern Review at Louisiana State University
from 1935-42, and later worked together at Yale.
John Crowe Ransom, whom Brooks first met at Vanderbilt, spoke of
r him in 1955 as "...probab1y the most forceful and influential
critic of poetry that we now have." Brooks has specialized in the
study of southern literature, and has published widely on the work
of William Faulkner, Eudora Welty, and Robert Penn Warren. Brooks'

Notes from the ACTS Executive Committee
Since January, the ACTS Executive Committee has been meeting weekly.
A nominating committee was appointed to fill the vacancy on the
· Executive committee created by Karen Boucias‘ leaving. Robin

. . Barnard, Interlibrary Loan, was elected to this position and is
serving as staff representative to the Administrative Council
and the Library Faculty.
The staff representatives were present at the Administrative
Council when the evaluation process was discussed. Questions
were raised by our members concerning the consistency of evalua—
tions among departments, who would be doing the evaluating, etc.
It was mentioned to the supervisors at this meeting that the
evaluations would be used to determine merit raises if the money
allotted by Personnel is for merit.
The Library Technician Education Committee has been meeting and
is working to formulate three workshops for the staff which we
hope to offer before the annual meeting in August.
The Executive Committee welcomes any suggestions that the staff
.has to offer. The members of the committee are Bob Sandrock
(AIDS/Media), Robin Barnard (I.L.L.), Gary Stottlemyer (Circulation),
