- Biography / History
- Mary Desha (1850-1911) was the daughter of John R. and Mury Curry Desha. Mary Desha attended the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Kentucky (later the University of Kentucky) and taught school in Lexington until 1885 she moved to Washington, D.C. to work as a governmental clerk. From 1888-1889, she worked as a school teacher in Alaska, later returning to Washington, D.C. where she worked in civil service until her death in 1911. In the fall of 1890, Mary Desha and three other women, Eugenia Washington, Ellen Hardin Walworth, and Mary S. Lockwood, founded the Daughters of the American Revolution in Washington, D.C. Desha was a member of the Montgomery chapter in the District of Columbia and became the National Secretary. During the Spanish-American War (1898) she served as the Assistant Director of the Daughters of the American Revolution Hospital Corps.
- Scope and Content
- The Mary Desha papers (dated 1889-1910, undated; 1.35 cubic feet; 3 boxes) primarily consists of letters and printed materials dealing with Mary Desha's work with the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). The majority of the letters consists of letters from various local DAR chapters members. Topics in these letters include questions regarding DAR rules and regulations, information about prospective members, and general organization matters. Additional items include printed material related to the DAR and her time as the Assistant Director of the Daughters of the American Revolution Hospital Corps.
