- Biography / History
- John L. Upton (1900-1986) was born in Arkansas in 1900 and enlisted in the Army at the beginning of World War I. Over a decade after the war, he had acquired enough high school education to enroll in the nursing program at the William Mason Memorial Hospital in Murray, Kentucky. The hospital was one of the few nursing schools that admitted male students in the first half of the 20th century. After his graduation, he worked at the Toledo State Hospital, also known as the Toledo Insane Asylum, in Ohio.
- Scope and Content
- The John L. Upton photograph album (dated circa 1934-1935; 0.09 cubic feet; 1 item) consists of an album of 120 sepia-toned or black and white silver gelatin photographs compiled by John L. Upton that documents his time training to become a nurse at the William Mason Memorial Hospital in Murray, Kentucky. The album begins with a portrait of Upton and a news article about his entrance into the nursing program. Some photographs show Upton and his female colleagues in their uniforms, in group shots, and candids. They are also seen caring for new babies, in surgery, and working in the kitchen. The staff is photographed using equipment in the hospital's laboratory, operating x-ray machines, and writing patient and staff information on a blackboard. Upton also captured views of the hospital as well as a former hospital building that was destroyed by a fire.
