Collection Overview

Biography / History
John L. Upton (1900-1986) was born in Arkansas in 1900 and enlisted in the Army at the beginning of World War I. Over a decade after the war, he had acquired enough high school education to enroll in the nursing program at the William Mason Memorial Hospital in Murray, Kentucky. The hospital was one of the few nursing schools that admitted male students in the first half of the 20th century. After his graduation, he worked at the Toledo State Hospital, also known as the Toledo Insane Asylum, in Ohio.
