     The Scott family papers (dated 1746-1962, bulk 1870-1915; 11 cubic feet; 24 boxes) consist of the business and personal papers of Lexington, Kentucky, attorney, Robert Augustine Thornton and his descendants.

     Biographical note 
 Robert Augustine Thornton (ca. 1843-1915) was born in Virginia. After serving in the Confederate Army during the Civil War he attended law school in Cincinnati, Ohio. He practiced law in Lexington, Kentucky in partnership at various times with John C. Breckinridge, J. B. Beck, and Charles Kerr. He married Caroline H. Preston, the daughter of General William Preston, in 1870 and had three children: William Preston Thornton, Margaret Howard Thornton who married George Radford Hunt, and Caroline Preston Thornton who married Dr. John W. Scott.    
   
     Scope and Contents 
 The Scott family papers (dated 1746-1962, bulk 1870-1915; 11 cubic feet; 24 boxes) consist of the business and personal papers of Lexington, Kentucky, attorney, Robert Augustine Thornton and his descendants. Thornton's papers include correspondence and legal papers from 1870-1915 and include material concerning James M. Haggin and Kentucky Court of Appeals decisions. The Scott family papers contain genealogical material on the Howard and Wickliffe families; letters to Robert Wickliffe, Innes Randolf, Mary M. Scott, Caroline Preston Thornton, Robert Augustine Thornton, Caroline Thornton Scott and Margaret Thornton Hunt; a letterbook belonging to Mathew T. Scott; a law notebook of General William Preston (1881); an account book; and a scrapbook. The Robert Innes series contains genealogical information for the Innes family and business letters from 1746-1876. The Catherine G. Reid papers consist of business documents from Lexington, Missouri, and Lexington, Kentucky, dated 1890-1910. She is believed to have been a Scott family servant. The Hunt family papers contain personal papers related to the marriage of Margaret Thornton Hunt (1904), and expressions of sympathy on the deaths of George Radford Hunt (1945) and Margaret Thornton Hunt (1962).
