- Biography / History
- During and after the Civil War, the United States Congress passed two acts, one in 1864 and one in 1866, which allowed loyal slaveowners in border states to file for federal compensation if their slaves served in the United States military. The law that formed the United States Colored Troops stated that no one who served could be enslaved. Because enlistment meant freedom, many slaves ran away to join the USCT. Slaveowners had to prove ownership and loyalty to the Union. Congress suspended this claims process in 1867.

- The Kentucky slave compensation forms (dated 1866-1867; 0.01 cubic feet; 2 folders) includes blank slave compensation forms for the state of Kentucky created by William Brown. The forms allowed for Kentucky slave owners, who remained loyal to the Union, to file for compensation from the federal government for slaves who enlisted or were drafted into the United States Military. The different sections of the form include Claim for Compensation for Enlisted Slave, Oath of Allegiance, Certification of Award of the Board of Claims, Proof of Loyalty, Proof of Ownership, Clerk's Certificate, and Endorsement.
