Spring Break Ideas that Won’t Break the Bank

By Jill Fgwbush
PR Staff

When spring break is mentioned.
Cancun, Florida, the Bahamas and South
Padre island are usually the first places that
come to mind. Never-ending partying,
nights filled With moments that are never
remembered the next day and lazy days on
the beath sound ideal, but how many stu-
dents can really afford to live out an extrav-
agant spring break every year?

Most students fit the typical stereotype
of being poor coilege students who can
barely afford a decent meal But there are
great places to travel all over the country
that won't break the bank and are guaran-
teed to entertain

For those searching for somewhere that
isn‘t too far to drive, Gatlinburg, Tenn..,
Tenn, has become a popular and inexpen—
swe place to Visit. With several tourist attrac-
tions and spectacular vrews from the
Appalachian Mountains, Gatlinburg, Tenn,
offers brand new cabins in the mountains
that can be rented very cheaply with a
large group of people. Some of the cabins
sleep up to lo people.

"l’m taking 12 of my friends to
Gatlinburg, Tenn, over winter break and
for five nights it was only $58 a person,"
said Lee Browning, a hospitality manage
ment and tourism Junior 'We are bringing
one blow-up mattress with us to squeeze in
more people which also saved us more
money by splitting the cost between more
people.”

A tip for booking cabins lS to do it early
for cheaper rates.

Another beautiful and exciting place to
viSit that is sometimes overlooked is
Savannah, Ga. Known for its Southern
charm, down-home cooking and famous
river walk, which offers plenty of shops and
restaurants

The city is also one of the most haunt-
ed in the world after Savannahs historical
role during the Owl War. For tourists brave
enough, there are nightly ghost tours by
horse and buggy. For those wanting a
great tan, the beach is fairly close as well.

The drive to Savannah is about nine
hours but plane tickets for students can
usually be purchased cheaply from
Southwest Airlines or Web Sites such as
Orbitz, Expedia and Travelooty. Hotels right
outsrde of downtown Savannah are the
places to book. Holiday inn w Savannah
Midtown offers a room for fOur people at
Sl i5 per person for six nights.

Chicago is also a very exciting City to
Visit ~ and inexpensive, too, With one-way
flights from LOUISVlHe frequently under
SlOO. Along Michigan Avenue, there are
shops galore with plenty of restaurants as
well. Chicago has a wide range of hotel
prices that will satisfy even the thriftiest of
Visitors. Expediacom offers deals to
Chicago With hotel and airfare included as
well,

For those students who can’t get
Cancun or the Bahamas off their minds,
there are very affordable packages through
local travel agencies and Web Sites such as

it’s time to plan for spring break again.
And this year there is no need to stress
about details and prices, JUST work With the
UK Student Travel Center STA Travel is locat-
ed on the second floor of the student cen~
ter next to the ticket office Its Job is to work
With students so they can get the most out
of their trip while savmg money

At spring break time, STA Travel offers
students low rates on trips to places such as
Cancun, Acapulco, Montego Bay, Negrii,
the Bahamas and many more destinations.

"The best way to save money is traveling
through a spring break charter package,”
Jake Cunningham a STA Travel adVIsor says.

These packages plan out most of your
trip where you do not have to worry about
plane tickets, hotel reservations, where
you'll eat or how to save money. When
you plan your trip With a charter package
everything Important is Included; your
round trip flight, hotel of chOice, a ride be
tween the airport and your hotel, meal
plans and free party packages. Every plan
has VIP packages offered for a little extra
cost, but the VIP ticket is the cheapest and
quickest way to get you into the hottest
Clubs Without haVing to wait in line.

Each destination offers a different price
as well as different options. For example,
five to seven night package in Acapulco,
MEXICO, starts $499. This includes eight ho
tels to choose from, each located on a
unique part of the coast.

While STA recommends charter pack-
ages, here are some important aspects that
they want you to consider while planning
your spring break destination

- if you Will be leavmg the country, get

your passport now. You cannot wait until
the last minute. If you do not have one,
you Will not be going.

- You will not know the actual day of
your departure until i0 days prior to your

trip. if this is not appealing, you can pay
more to have a firm date for your plane
ticket.

- The length of your spring break is de-
termined by the departure date of your
flight. Keep this in mind when dealing with
work and exam schedules. Flights may not
be direct, and the departure times may

_ Everyone wants that golden shine
when first taking off that T-shirt on the
beach. Tanning before vacation Will help
you attain this bronzed look. There are a
few safety rules to make your tanning expe
rience go smoothly.

Always wear eye gear to keep UV rays
away from your eyes. If you are a first-timer
gradually build up the amount of time you
spend in the tanning bed, Try starting at i0
to l2 minutes. Also, to avoid any skin con—
cerns try uSing a mystic tan first Lastly,
remember to put lotion on before and after
tanning. "I buy speCial lotion for before tan-
ning and a different one for after, " explains
Jen Jones an undeCided sophomore.

Many college students are on budgets,
especially around spring break. Here are a
few tanning salons that Will help keep more
money in your pocket,

1.Golden Tan

2434 Nicholasville Road

278-3285

Golden Tan offers 40 different beds
ranging from face tanners, stand ups and
mystic tan. For students with their l.D., a
visit is only $2 and face tanners are only
$3. Golden Tan's mystic tanning is $l6.95
per visit. At Golden Tan there is never a
wait and there are also beverages available.

2. Southern Rays Tanning

468 Southland Drive

278-4944

Southern Rays also offers two other
locations, but Southland Drive is the closest

I Walkn’Talkz‘

to campus. Southern Rays‘ individual visits
are 56, Southern Rays has a variety of pack-
ages in different level beds.

3. Sun Spa Tan and Body

313 Virginia Ave.

381-0001

Sun Spa has the most to offer of the
tanning salons around Lexmgton. But Sun
Spa also has higher prices. Sun Spa has
seven different types of beds, as well as an
oxygenating system, massages, body
wraps, anti-cellulite packages and much
more. Sun Spa has UV free tanning, bronz—
ing tanning, stand up beds, eight minute
tanning and mystic tanning. Sun Spa’s
monthly speCials for students are $39 and
$75 dollars for three months. Sun Spa has
two other Lexington locations.

4. Sun Tan City

3181 Beaumont Circle

296-1 442

Sun Tan City offers fast, faster and the
fastest tanning bed types and mystic tan-
ning. Sun Tan City has Club Sun, which is

$18.88 a month. When Spring Break comes

change.

- Be prepared to travel to Cincinnati,
Louisville, lndianapolis or Columbus air-
ports. Flights may change due to cancella-
tions, etc.

- Hotels may require a security deposit
from each person at check-in. Bring an
emergency credit card or cash and call your
hotel in advanced, because the security de
posit may be cash only.

— Departure taxes are not collected by
the spring break operator and must be paid
at the airport on your departure. Not all

destinations are taxed.

~ Sometimes hotels are overbooked, and
the spring break operator reserves the right
to change your hotel to one of equal or
greater value at any time.

- Travel insurance is highly recommend-
ed. This is the only way to get your money
back if something comes up.

Right now, STA offers students insurance
for $48 on trips of eight days or less. When
purchasing a charter package, insurance is
necessary due to the fact that you do not
know your flights departure date or time
until l0 days before you leave. The $48
covers travel protection (ie. trip cancella—
tion, trip delay and trip interruption), bag-
gage protection, medical protection and
more. If you get sick a few days before you
leave and have to cancel, the plan covers
you. The insurance also covers accident
protection and worIdWide emergency assis—
tance services, which takes care of emer-
gency cash transfers. in the case of an
exam on Thursday or Friday, potentially
when your flight could be scheduled to
leave, travel insurance Will rescheduled your
flight with no hassle. This add-on is highly
recommended and the STA advisers can an-
swer any questions about what insurance
will be best for you.

The STA student advisors in the Student
Center are very helpful and will get you any
information that you need for planning
your spring break. They have over a dozen
spring break trips to choose from, not to
mention any other desired locations around
the world. So grab some friends and enjoy
your week of fun in the sun with no stress
thanks to your STA-planned trip.

This spring break, thousands of stu»
dents Will flock to the hottest and best
spring break getaway spots. These
include locations such as Cancun.
Daytona, the Bahamas and Atlanta,
That's right, Atlanta. But Why would
anyone pick a vacation spot like Atlanta
over a sundrenched island or a bikini
haven?

The answer lies in the very blood of
the true Wildcat fan The DNA of a blue
blooded, Eruption»Zone~filling, ticket—
clutching Kentucky Wildcat calls for the
ultimate in Southeastern Conference
action The 2007 SEC Tournament in
Atlanta.

Last year's tournament was held in
the Gaylord Center in NashVIlle, Tenn ,
but this year, the show moves back to
Atlanta, Or as it is called once the
games begin, ‘Catlanta " While some
students spend their break lying in the
sun or playing in the waves, the truest
of Wildcats Will adorn their cars With
blue and white streamers, UK flags and
decals, and prepare for the fivehour pile
grimage that is their duty and their call-

ing Hundreds of UKthemed vehicles
Will stream down L75, and the ttnllCIDJ
tion Will only grow as the Atlanta skyline
comes into View

During the 2004 SEC tournament,
UK fans met in parks and local spots
such as The Varsity drive—in restaurant
before the Cats played. Students could
be heard chanting ’C-A-T‘S' on the
MARTA (Atlanta's public bus and rail sys-
tem) and in the streets outSide the
Georgia Dome. Throngs of blueclad
fans grouped together and virtually took
over bar spots and restaurants before
games. Students waited for hours in the
sun for tickets, only feet from a similar
line (albeit a much shorter line) of
Florida Gators incessant chanting of
rankings and championship Wins rang
out as the Wildcats waited to enter the
arena.

Hundreds of miles away, spring
breakers airbrushed T—shirts to remember
their vacation. In Atlanta, the Wildcat
basketball team lined up for the Star
Spangled Banner, backed by the true
blue fans Kentucky is known for.

The 2007 SEC Tournament Will be
held once again in the Georgia Dome

tions Will go quickly, as Will the 26,000
tickets for each session At the 2004
tournament in Atlanta, 2 l 2, lZZ fans
attended over the event's four days A
ticket booklet for all i l games can be
purchased for 5260 through
secsportscom. Student tickets are avail-
able to those With a valid ID beginning
at 9 am the day of the game, and they
cost S l0 per sessron. Call the UK Ticket
Office at 257~l 8 l 8 for student ticket
information. Call l»800a928-2287 for
general ticket information

The 380—mile trip takes about srx
hours to drive and if you are staying
outsrde the city, you should allow about
an hour to get downtown. The MARTA
is a good option for traveling, as it gets
you there quickly and very cheaply it
also eliminates the chance of getting
lost in Atlanta traffic Many hotels can
be found downtown or on the outskirts
of the City, for bette rates.

Spring Break 2007 is fast approach—
ing. Some students Will opt for a leisure
ly float in the pool. Others, the trueblue
Kentucky fans, Will head to Atlanta for
the 2007 SEC Tournament in March
