The University of Kentucky Invitational Basketball Tournament represents an attempt to provide athletics patrons with cage competition of the highest calibre and re-express the ideal of an abiding faith in the value of intercollegiate athletics as an instrument in promoting friendly relations.
The inaugural feature of the proposed annual tourney succeeds almost beyond the highest expectations in presenting a representative field of inter-sectional opponents, all of whom are ranked among the nation's top 20 basketball elite.
LaSalle's Explorers, recognized as one of the East's major independent cage powers and powered by the great All-America scoring machine, Tom Gola, currently stand 20th in the national polls despite only one mar on their record. The basketball-wise Duke Blue Devils closed with racehorse speed and class at the end of last season and this year are off and running again with only an upset loss to Vanderbilt marked against them. Duke now rates as the nation's 13th best quintet.
Seventeenth-ranked UCLA represents the Pacific Coast and Far West with one of the classiest quintets in the country that might easily walk off with tournament honors if taken too lightly. The Kentucky Wildcats, bidding anew for top national recognition after a year's enforced layoff, occupy the number two spot in cage power indexes close on the heels of defending NCAA champion Indiana and will rate as the probable favorite to cop the tourney title on their home floor, where they have gone undefeated in 1 12 straight games over an 1 1-year span.
Groundwork for the invitational tourney was laid nearly two years ago when discussions of long standing culminated in a proposal for a Christmas holidays cage meet in Lexington to replace the season-end Southeastern Conference Tournament in Louisville. Although league officials turned down the original suggestions for an SEC tourney on the Wildcats' floor, new impetus was given plans for a holiday meet by abandonment of the annual SEC Tournament after the 1952 meet and the UK's public statement of athletic policy a few months later prohibiting cage play by Kentucky in most privately-controlled, off-campus arenas.
Selection of teams to take part in the tournament was based on considerations of national reputation in cage circles, potential calibre of play expected this season, and the desire to give the tourney an inter-sectional flavor with a top team representing various parts of the country.

In Memory of Those Who Died
This is a house built not on sand but on a firm foundation. Fabricated out of steel, stone, concrete, and brick, it is more substantially built than the Coliseum at Rome and should stand as long. This is Kentucky's Coliseum. It belongs to the people. Erected as a memorial to our honored dead of World War II, it is to be used in the service of the living.
It is an honest building.
This is a house built not for superficial purposes but for an honest program of education. It is a sports arena where thousands may gather in wholesome recreation to witness games of skill played by men who display the finest quality of sportsmanship. It is a gymnasium where students pursue courses in physical education to the betterment of their minds and bodies. It is an auditorium where students and citizens may meet to hear the world's greatest speakers and thinkers bring us wisdom and knowledge. It is a music hall where we may assemble to listen to the great artists of all nations lift us to new heights of aesthetic appreciation. May it, also, frequently be a temple where we may worship and be led into closer communion with God. It will ever be a shrine where the brokenhearted may come to pay homage to their own who paid the last full measure of devotion.

FRANK RAMSEY, Madisonville, Ky. Tabbed as the "Blond Bombshell of Basketball" by sportswriters awed at his colorful antics on the court, Frank Ramsey is co-captain of the 1953-54 Wildcat cage team and ranks as a prime candidate for All-American honors. Sophomore of the Year in the Southeastern Conference three years ago, Ramsey was named to many All-America squads as a junior standout in '52 and was a consensus second team choice. St. Louis U. Coach Eddie Hickey once praised the Wildcat ace as the finest basketball player in America. Typical of the type of guards employed by Coach Rupp in his racehorse-style, controlled fast break offense, Ramsey is big (6-3 and 185), extremely fast, aggressive under the boards and a very good outside shooter. He specializes at driving layups, which few opponents guarding him are able or care to stop, and generally serves as Rupp's floor general in setting up plays. He's also a terrifice defensive player, often stealing the ball from unwary opponents and driving the length of the floor.
