Scope and Content
The Stephen Reed sketchbook (dated 1918; 0.05 cubic feet; 1 folder) comprises a single sketchbook belonging to a German soldier whose sketchbook was brought to America after an American soldier killed him in France during World War I. . The inside of this sketch book has a note written by the American soldier that explained the name of the German soldier, Stephen Reed, and his date of death, July 21st 1918. Reed was killed in France after he played the "comrade act" and then tried to kill the Americans with a machine gun. The American soldier did not include his name in the note. There are twenty sketches in total and appear to be drawn with a plain pencil. The sketches are very detailed and showcase different forts, trenches, houses, latrines, graveyards and rubble from the war.
The Stephen Reed sketchbook is part of the Wade Hall Collection of American letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
