Collection Overview

Biography / History
Frank Selby Hurst was a Lexington attorney and businessman. He was born in Lexington, Kentucky to O.E. (Ora Earl) and Mabel Letton Hurst circa 1925 and graduated from Henry Clay High School in 1942. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Kentucky in 1945. Just two years later in 1947, Mr. Hurst earned his law degree from UK and was given the Sullivan Award for outstanding Kentucky male graduate. While in law school he served as editor of the Kentucky Law Journal. After completing his education, Mr. Hurst was secretary of the Kentucky State Board of Bar Examiners for about ten years.
Mr. Hurst was also president of the Hurst Home Insurance Company of Lexington and one of the organizers of the Bank of Lexington. As an attorney, Mr. Hurst was involved in a number of important legal cases in Kentucky, including the $30 million antitrust suit over the sale of the Maine Chance Farm. He was also the attorney for Lexington veterinarian Arnold Pessin and California horseman Rex Ellsworth when they attempted to build a racetrack to compete with Keeneland in 1972. Mr. Hurst died in February 22, 1974 at age 49 after a prolonged illness. He is buried in Lexington Cemetery. It is evident from the photographs that Mr. Hurst was unable to walk from infancy.
Scope and Content
The Frank Selby Hurst papers and photographs consist primarily of personal and family photographs. The collection is comprised of seven photograph albums and many individual photographs. There are two scrapbooks documenting Frank Selby Hurst's accomplishments. Also included are diplomas, certificates, and awards. Additionally, there are clippings of Frank Selby Hurst and his father O.E. Hurst and two pieces of childhood correspondence.

Contents of the Collection

Photographic Materials, circa 1900-1974

The Photographic Materials series consists of the photographs of Frank Selby Hurst. The images are mainly personal and family photos. Most of the photos are from Frank Selby Hurst's lifetime, including many vacation snapshots and loose photos. Some photo albums are preserved as sets. There is one set of negatives from a trip to California in 1949 and one set of slides from a trip to Florida in 1961. Mold was detected on some of the scrapbooks.

Scrapbooks, 1942-1959

The Scrapbooks series consists of two scrapbooks containing clippings, correspondence, programs, photographs, and greeting cards. Scrapbook 1 contains mostly items from 1942. It contains the program from Hurst's high school graduation, graduation photos, and congratulatory greeting cards and correspondence that Hurst received upon graduation from high school. Scrapbook 2 begins in 1942 and ends in 1959. It contains correspondence, programs, and clippings about some of Mr. Hurst's college honors and fraternity membership, as well as his accomplishments in later years. It also contains clippings about his father, O.E. Hurst, as well as a group photograph containing Mr. Hurst.

Papers, 1926-1976

The Papers series consists of diplomas and certificates, clippings, and ephemera. The diplomas consist of Mr. Hurst's high school, university, and law school diplomas, as well as various honors he received. There is one certificate for Ora Earl Hurst. The diplomas and certificates are arranged chronologically. The clippings are mostly about Frank Selby Hurst's accomplishments; some are laminated. They include his Lexington Herald and Leader obituary, two other death announcements, clippings about O.E. Hurst, and the University of Kentucky 1947 Commencement. Also included is printed ephemera.
