- Biography / History
- Henry A. House (1882-1947) was born in Des Moines, Iowa to Francis House (1855-1926) and Mary Viola McCracken (1859-1942). The family moved twice when Henry was a child, relocating from Iowa to Pennsylvania and then moving again to Minnesota, where they remained. During World War I, Henry enlisted in the army, attaining the rank of captain by his release in 1919. No other biographical information available.
- American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
- Scope and Content
- The Henry House papers (dated 1918-1920, undated; 0.025 cubic feet; 1 folder) comprises fragments of a scrapbook, including photographs, advertisements, receipts, orders, and letters that document the experiences of Henry House serving in the army during World War I. The photographs are portraits of soldiers in the regiments that House was an officer in, the receipts are of goods and clothing supplied by the army for soldiers deployed overseas, and the advertisements are for entertainment events provided to the soldiers to keep morale up. The orders found in the collection include plans for tactical movements and attacks, a secret memorandum that announced the signing of the armistice, permission for House to sail back to the states, and a passenger list for a troop and civilian transport ship.
- The Henry House papers collection is part of the Wade Hall Collection of American Letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
