Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- The Lexington Garden Club was formed in March 1916 by twelve avid gardeners. In 1924, the group was invited to join the Garden Club of America, the first in Kentucky. The club went on to sponsor the membership for the the Paducah Garden Club in 1929 and the Glenview Garden Club of Louisville in 1932. The purpose of the Garden Club of Lexington is to promote the knowledge and love of gardening and protect the environment. The Garden Club of Lexington hosted many national and regional events including the meeting of the Presidents Council of the Garden Club of Americas (1928), the Southren Zone meeting (1957), zone VII garden tours, and flower shows. In 1950, the Henry Clay Foundation asked the club to create a garden on the grounds of Ashland, the Henry Clay estate. Members have been tending the gardens since, and in 2005 they received an Historical Preservation Award for their years of stewardship.
