 Annual Business Meeting - April 10, 1970

The Garden Club of Lexington met Friday,
April 10, 1970, at 11:00 A.M. at the Idle Hour Countr
Club for the annual business meeting and luncheon.
About forty members were present. Mrs. Combs.
president, presided.

The secretary read the minutes of the last
meeting which were approved as read.

The treasurer reported a current balance
of approximately $895.00.

Mrs. Combs issued an invitation from Mrs.
Coleman Johnston to all members ofl the Garden Club
for tea and to see the fields of daffodils surround-
ing her home next Wednesday. April 15. from 4:00
until 6:00 P.M.

Mrs. Combs asked for the annual reports
which were as follows:

Admissions — Mrs. Crutcher said one former
member was readmitted, three new members were admit-
ted, and one active member was made an honorary
member.

Awards - Mrs. Stoll reported there were
twenty exhibitors during the year. Mrs. Ray won
the first prize for the most points when she acquir-
ed three extra points for the table arrangements for
the luncheon this day. Miss Johnston won the second
prize.

Conservation — Miss Daisy Hume spoke of
the great increase in interest in conservation dur-
ing the last two years. and she presented a scrap-
book, which she had compiled, bfl information about
some of the most important topics. Mrs. Ray suggest—
ed that this be brought to the attention of the
Garden Club of Kentucky.

) Garden Club 23 America - Mrs. Garrick's
'report was in two sections - one as correspondent
for the Bulletin and one as a Zone Director. She
said only one article from the Garden Club of Lex-

ington had been turned in during the last four years

 

 and she pleaded for more to be submitted for publi-
cation in the Bulletin. She then gave an account
of her activities as Director of Zone VI in 1967
and then as Director of Zone VII in 1968 and 1969. . ‘

Garden Project - Mrs. Simpson's report on
the garden was detailed and appreciative of the
twenty-two active workers who helped maintain it
last year. She suggested having three co-chairman
instead of two.

 

Garden Project Treasurer - Mrs. Crutcher
gave a full accounting of receipts and disbursements
and said the total assets at present abount to about

. including $2500.00 received from the
gift shop.

Gift Shop - Mrs. Morris told of another
successful year of operation of the shop at Ashland,
but expressed a hope to increase the volume of
sales by about $500.00 to meet emergencies.

Gift Treasurer - Mrs. Warfield's
financial report he; the shop was very encouraging.
The gross sales for the year amounted to 910. 278. 9
(about the same as 1968). Almost $5,000.00 was
realized as net income.

Horticulture - Mrs. Hagan said there had
been only two horticulture meetings in the past year,
but she listed the individual accomplishments of
certain outstanding members which were impressive
and landable. It was suggested that this be brought
to the attention of Mrs. Matheson. chairman of Zone
VII.

Treasurer 2: the Garden Club of Lexington -
Mrs. Schubert gave a fine report in which she noted
the possible necessity of having to raise dues
eventually to cover some increasing expenses and to
build a fund for programs. She mentioned with re-
gret the resignation of one member, Mrs. Coleman
Johnston. and the deaths of four beloved members.
Mrs. Jo Desha McDowell, Mrs. Perry Hamilton. Mrs.
Augustus Gay and Miss Sunshine Sweeny.

 

Program - Mrs. Johnson was absent. but .
Mrs. Combs expressed appreciation for her efforts
in obtaining interesting programs in spite of

many unexpected changes in plans.

Annual Business Meeting - 4/10/70 (cont'd.)

Mrs. Crutcher noted the absence of Mrs.
Crosby and reported for her that the Garden Club
of Lexington won second prize for attendance at the
Landscape Design Course sponsored by the Garden
Clob of Kentucky in cooperation with the Dept. of
Horticulture of the U. of Ky. in March.

Mrs. Garrick said the horticultural topic
for study in Zone VI; for the coming year will be
wildflowers. ‘

Mrs. Combs then gave her excellent report
as president. She mentioned the extension of her
tenure of office by several months due to the change
in the fiscal year so that it now coincides with
that of the Garden Club of America and the Garden
Club of Kentucky. She expressed great sorrow over
the death of Miss Sunshine Sweeny March 30. 1970.
Then she spoke strongly of the need for all members
to participate in the activities of the club and
to interest themselves in the current problems of
conservation and preservation.

Mrs. Schubert thanked Mrs. Combs for her
outstanding contribution to the Garden Club of
Lexington as president.

Mrs. Combs then presented the gavel to
the new president. Mrs. Hagan, who accepted it
graciously.

Mrs. Hagan announced the following com-
mittees for 1970-71:

 Annual Business Meeting — April 16, 1971

The Garden Club of Lexington net Friday,
April 16, 1971. at lled A.M. at the Idle Hour
Country Club for the annual business meeting and
luncheon. About thirty—four members were present.
Mrs. Hagan. president. presided.

The minutes of the last general meeting and
the last board mectine were read and approved as
corrected.

Mrs. Emmet Milward. the treasurer. reported
a book balance of $847.54. and said the books had
been audited by Miss Sallie Johnston.

Mrs. Hagan read the list of the houses and
gardens which are to be open for the "Open House
in Kentucky” tour May 22 and 25. She also an-
nounced that there is to be a tour of gardens in
Louisville Tuesday. June l.

Mrs. Hagan then asked for the annual reports
which were as follows:

Admissions: Mrs. Turner said one new member
had been admitted in the past year and that there
are no vacancies at present.

Awards: Mrs. Ray announced the winner of
the first prize for the most points was Miss
Sallie Johnston who had thirty-two points. Mrs.
Robert Van Meter won second prize with eleven
points. There were seven other exhibitors.

HHS rvation: Mrs. John Harris Clay read a
report for Mrs. wRobert Van Meter who was absent.
It outlined the progress in education about conser-
vation, awards,actiVities and contributions made
by members of this club.

Garden Club oi America: Mrs. Carrick divided
.her report into two - one as a corr respondent of
the bulletin and one as a director of the Garden
01Ub Of America, She commended Mrs. Combs for
serving on the Founders' Fund Committee and for
being invited to serve on the non; natior1 Comrittee.
Mrs. C: rrick again expressed appreciation for the

that the need for workers in the garden is especial—
ly urgent this spring; necause of the broken wrist

ported a balance of 3608. 4U March 1. l97l. The
total assets of the garden. which include certifi-
cates of deposit. are 34,108.40.

 ANNUAL MEETING April 25,1975

The Garden Club of Lexington met Friday April 25,
1975 at 2:30 p.m. at the home of Mrs. T. A1 Hagan.
26 members were present.

The meeting was called to order by the president,
Mrs. John P. Barrow, jr. The minutes of the March
14 General Meeting were read and approved as read.

Mrs. Robert Hillenmeyer, gift shop chairman, announced
that the shop will hold an Open House April 30 at
10:00 a.m.

The motions seconded from the March 14 General Meet-
ing were discussed. A motion was made to move the
question and vote by show of hands. Motion seconded
and carried. The motion to raise the dues of each
member ten dollars carried. Clarificatdon as to the
intent of the second motion was made. Members of

the Garden Club of Lexington will have the opportun-
ity to vote on any change in their dues. The motion
that the amount of our dues not appear in our bylaws
carried.

Mrs. Job Turner reported from a meeting of the Lex-
ington Council of Garden Clubs. The members were
asked to fill out cards to create a resource bank for
flowers, foliage and greenery for Open House in Ken-
tucky.

Mrs. Robert Hillenmeyer, Miss Sallie Johnston and
Mrs. Luther Caldwell, jr. reported from the Zone VII
meeting in Paducah.

The Founders Fund nominations were read. The members
voted their preference for the project proposed by
the Garden Club of Greenville, South Carolina. ‘

Officers and chairmen of standing committees filed
their annual reports.

The treasurer, Mrs. Samuel B. Walton, jr. noted an
Operating loss of $124.97 Mrs. Caldwell, jr. re-
ported a net of $3416.38 as shop auditor. Mrs. Ro-
bert Warfield, garden project_reasurer, announced a
bank balance of $185.46 with $4000 in certificates of
deposit and $893.89 in the memorial fund.

Mrs. James Morris noted one Opening in associate
memberships.

The president's annual reort was made in the form
of thank-you gifts to each member present.

unable to attend the Zone VII mini meeting held
in Charlottesville, Virginia.

A state meeting of the Garden Club of Kentucky
will be held at the Campbell House here in Lex-
ington May 27, 28, 29.
