 TIPS FOR SPRING

%%

Daffodil sap shortens the life of other flowers. Before
adding daffodils to an arrangement, cut their stems
and allow them to stand in cool water for an hour.

To give tulips or other long—stemmed flowers extra
support, scrunch a 12" square of chicken wire into a
loose form and push it into the container. The wire
makes arranging the tulips easier and also holds them
updght>

From Mara Grev, The Lazv Gardener

Remember, gardens aren’t for “shoulds,” they
are for pleasure.

Give yourself an hour to just be in your yard,
doing nothing but sitting, looking and
relaxing.

Respect your gardening experiments (i.e.
failures). Mistakes fuel the learning process
and make you a better gardener.

The Garden at Ashland

Please come to work in the garden on
Thursday, June 15‘", since our General Meeting is on
Wednesday.

- Thanks, Jessica and Callie

A Message from Libby
I would like to thank and recognize a few members for
their special efforts on the club’s behalf.

Our appreciation to Lucy Breathitt, Ellen Chapman,
Joan Gaines, Katy Steffee, and Gay Van Meter who
successfully nursed plants and seedlings through the
winter and carefully repotted and nurtured them until
the Plant Exchange.

Ashland Garden is looking glorious. The new sod is
green and growing; Callie and Jessica hauled hoses,
watered at all hours, swept mud and dirt, and have
lovingly tended the grass. Jessica’s new coats of paint
on the patio furniture have made it new again.

Elise organized and scheduled members who sold
cookbooks at Spendthrift; thanks to her and everyone
who helped.

Gay was brave enough appear on the noon show on
Channel 27, Friday, May 5, to promote the cookbook.
She did a wonderful job, and prepared a Derby Picnic
that looked delicious.

My thanks to these ladies and all of you who willingly
say yes when asked to help; that is what makes our
Garden Club a special pleasure and such fun.

Did You Know.... According to an article in the
August 18‘ Louisville-Courier Journal yardwork may
help prevent osteoporosis. “ Researchers at the
University of Arkansas have found that performing
yardwork at least once a week appears to be one
of the best ways to build and maintain healthy
bones... .There is a lot of weight-bearing motion
that goes on in the garden-digging holes, pulling
weeds, pushing a mower.”

The late summer garden has a tranquility found no other time
of the year.

overwinter in the garden debris and fallen leaves,
so do a thorough cleanup to eliminate the problem!

Unfortunately, the responses to the general meetings
have been disappointing for some time now. We have
tried using post cards instead of phone calls in the hopes
of improving these responses. It seems that the same
twenty or so members fail to respond time after time.
Ladies, we all lead busy lives, but it is only courteous to
reply to a fellow member who has gone to the time, effort
and expense to hostess a meeting.

A Message from Libby

At the November General Meeting we will be
