/%e refer to your letter of January 25 te Mr. G. E. Rose,
// which was passed to the writer for his attention.
/// We note that you expected the sprinkler system would be
completed and ready for test on February lst. It is the
regular procedure to test newly installed sprinkler
systems to 200 pound pressure.
Regarding inspection by some organized company for
acceptance, believe Mr. W, H. Allen has made arrangements
with the Associated Factory Rutuals to make this test
and they expect to have a man in that vicinity the latter
part of this month. However, I believe your Mr. Gregory,
who is familiar with the installation and has blue prints
covering same, will be competent to pass on this system
as far as workmanship is concerned.
If the Mutual man finds anything wrong, it will probably
be very minor. However, when we obtain the report, they
will state what changes are necessary to meet their
approval and these can be taken care of by ourselves.
`This does not mean that the Mutual Company will have
policies to cover this hotel, but are acting at the
request of Mr. Allen more as an accommodation.
I would liked to have been at Benham when the test was
being made but am under the doctor's orders and cannot do
any walking for the present.
Yours very truly

ample and sufficient time to put these fires out before they s
have had a chance to get any kind of a start and to do any reel
» or sizable damage to the property.
_ Prior to 1951 the Denham Tire Team participated in all.
the international Harvester Company Fire Conteeta and in 1030
the Bonham team won the Cyrus ¥cCormiek, Jr. Cup whieh·we hold
here at Bonham for about five years. However, during that
period of time these fire contests were discontinued by theo
~ Company as you know turing the depression no doubt on account of
the expenses connected with conducting these contests. Those
contests were started up again two years ago, as I recall, the ~
first one being hold in lO5G. However, they are new being cone
ducted on a different basis and fire teams consisting of fifteen
to seventeen people are sont to plants in iifferent districts
for competing in those contests. The Benhmi team has not competed
in these contests for the last two years on account of the expense
involved. This matter was taken up with Ur. Uerritt and Er.Ei;gert
at the time, and we figured that we would not je to this expense
which—we estimated at somewhere in the neighborhood of fGOO.CO to
send a team back and forth. o
Ye trust that this covers the information desired. `

vouR LETTER 3..2M..j$ j;’B;f';TND_ FIRE FIGHTING! X
e Referring to your letter of March 2I+th to Mr. Seidenbecker on fire
fighting, I think that you, no doubt, have a good fire fighting personnel
under the charge of Mr. Gregory, but it would seem to me that it might
be well for you as plant superintendent to set aside a half day, at any
rate, twice a year, say the lst of Mag and the lst of November, for a
check-up by a committee made up o yourself, the assi stent superintendent
of the plant, the superintendent of safety and labor, chief engineer,
and any others that you feel should be on the committee to go around and
make an inspection of the fire fighting equipment and personnel that is
supposed to be headed up by Mr. Gregory.
In other words, I think it would be well to establish a definite
program of making a check-·up on the fire fighting layout of the Benham
Works twice a year.

FORMR_ R. E, Galbreath, Supt.-
Y<>¤T< LETTER *+-5-58 §;’“;i§TN,,_ FIRE FIGHTING:
Referring to your letter of April 5th on fire fighting and the
postscript in longhand, I have gotten your letter of November 17, 19jY,
in front of me together with the appropriation request form.
These are days when mighty few appropriation requests are
approved. Meeting after meeting, and week after week, of the Executive
Council go by without a single appropriation request receiving approval.
In other words, the Company is aiming to bring its outgo in cash down to
and below its collections, i.e., collections for farm implements, tractors,
steel, coal and everything else. It has taken a longer time to accom-
plish such results than one would have thought or prophesied. Hence, I
am rather loathe to approve this expenditure for fire hose unless it is
absolutely necessary.
On the other hand, I think it false economy to allow our fire
protection facilities to go to the bad and perhaps be the cause of a
much greater loss than new fire hose would amount to. However, I wish
you would look it over again and see if any of this old hose can be re-
paired that it would be good enough a year or so longer and afford fairly
good protection for a year or so more,- and then see if perhaps for $UOO.
or $500. you can't get enough hose and so locate the new hose that if a
fire did break out at any of our houses, you could get an old hose that
would stand up in service or if it should fail, you could get several
sections of the new hose that we might buy for suoo. or $500. for this
year and then next year let us get the balance of it. Thereby, bringing
out one—half or thereabouts of the expenditure into another year.
As far as the distribution of the cost of it over several months
on coal production, it is agreeable with me that that be done. However,
it does not make a great deal of difference whether it is done or not.
If it is all taken up in one month let us put an asterisk on the item, and
a note explaining that the coal cost is up due to the cost of absorbing
so many dollars for fire hose. Then, the following months you will have
a chance to get the cost down to rock bottom. As a usual thing, I would
. rather prefer to take it up in one lump sum when I was at the Steel Works
and thereby have a chance to get the cost down to a record low on some
future months.
If you will look this over again and let me have another letter
_k// and form filled out bringing it down as low as you can possibly do for
(/A j/jL// this year, I will approve it and send it back to you promptly.
