Dedication of the imposing group of new buildings provided by Congress for
` the Pittsburgh Experiment Station of the Bureau cf Mines, Uegartment cf the In-
terior, will take place with formal ceremonies during the week of September 29
to October 4, l9l9. lt is expected that Secretary of the Interior Lane and
other high officials of the Government, the Governors of several States and
many representatives of the mining industry will be pre ent. You and other
officials of your company are invited to attend.
Part of the week will be given tc a nation-wide first—aid and mine rescue
meet to be held under the auspices of the Bureau of Mines at Forbes Field,
Pittsburgh, Fa., adjacent to the new Bureau cf Mines buildings. This event
4 q should be made even more notable in the movement for safety and efficiency in
I the mining sri ¢i+;“lurgical industries than was the First National Mine Safety
V Demonstration held at Pittsburgh in l?ll. On the morning and afternoon of Sep-
tember BO, there will be elimination firnt—aii and mine rescue contests open to
all teams from the mining and metallurgical industries in the United States.
Souvenir banners, badges, and mementos will be qiven io all teams that actually
compete. All teams competing will be raced by judges; the twenty first-aid
teams (if there are thirty or mov; entries] and the ten min; rescue teams (if
there are twenty or more entries) receiving the highest rating will on the fol-
lowin; day comoete in their respective events for national supremacy and the
national contest cups, medals, ani other p ice; that will be awarded. lf less
than thirty first—aid or twenty mine rescue zwane are entered, the number
allowed to qualify fo: the final judging will be out proportionately. The
ratings made in preliminary and final contests by the teams found eligible for
the finals will be made public; the rating of a team not qualifying will be made
known to that team only.
The sole expense connected with tre entry of a team will be the cost of
transportation and subsistence of the men on the ‘eam. lt is expected that
///1/each team will provide its own rescue and first—aid equipment.

f earnoctly desired. On behalf of the Bureau of Mines, I invite your company to
i enter one cr more first-aid and mine rescue teams. Any suggestions you may
have to offer in connection with the plan as outlined above will be given careful
consideration.
An entry blank is enclosed herewith. When this entry blank is received by
the Bureau, the general rules that will govern the contest will be mailed you.
lf the Bureau can be of service to you by giving first—1id or mine rescue
training from any of its rescue cars or stations, please advise the Bureau as
soon as practicable so that your requirements can be taken care of as far as pos- A
sible in ample time.
