- Biography / History
- The 15th Kentucky Cavalry formed in the fall of 1862 and mustered into service at Paducah, Kentucky. Gabriel Nelter served as their initial Lieutenant Colonel before his death at Owensboro, Kentucky. Afterward, A. P. Henry became the commanding officer, but was captured at Spring Creek, Tennessee, in 1863. Major William Walker became senior officer and commanded until mustered out of service at Paducah, Kentucky in October 1863. The 15th cavalry engaged chiefly in scouting through the 1st district in western Kentucky and served as the only protection for the citizens of that section. The unit sustained losses at several skirmishes, including at Owensboro, Kentucky, and the battle of Spring Creek, Tennessee.
- Scope and Content
- The 15th Kentucky Cavalry records consist of the enlistment papers of James Morley of Livingston County, Kentucky; pay vouchers; quartermasters' records; scouting orders; and rosters for the 15th Kentucky Cavalry. The records primarily document the units' activities scouting in western Kentucky in 1863.
