- Biography / History
- Ann Pancake is an author originally from Romney, West Virginia. Her first novel, Strange as This Weather Has Been, published in 2007, documented life below a mountaintop removal strip mine. She met and became friends with Pauline Canterberry and Mary Miller in 2002 during her research for the novel. She and Pauline continued to correspond and visit until Pauline’s death in 2014.
- Scope and Content
- The Ann Pancake collection on Pauline Canterberry (dated 2004-2014; 0.15 cubic feet; 1 folder) consists of letters written by Pauline Canterberry to author Ann Pancake concerning coal mining and mountain top removal in Sylvester, West Virginia. These letters discuss the environmental problems caused by Massey Energy coal mines and mountaintop removal in and around Sylvester, West Virginia, especially the Elk Run Mining facility. The letters talk about coal dust covering the town and Massey Energy's failure to repair a large dome covering the coal processing machines meant to limit the amount of dust in the air. A letter from October 13, 2008, includes a draft copy of an article by Pauline Canterberry and Mary Miller called "We're Called the Dustbusters." Each letter also updates Ann Pancake about friends and family as well as Pauline Canterberry's and Mary Miller's health.
