Collection Overview

Biography / History
Kentucky legislator. Lott was the only Fusion member of the Kentucky House of Representatives. He was elected by Hancock county voters November 13, 1913.
Scope and Content
These are letters by Simon Buckner Lott to his family during the 1914 meeting of the Kentucky General Assembly. His letters to his wife, Nancy, and family generally concern personal news but also include information about bills before the legislature and the agenda for their discussion. One letter, written on a copy of House Bill 308, introduced by another representative, would make it unlawful for women over the age of eighteen to wear skirts less than thirty-three inches in width in public. Fines levied against offenders were to go to the Orphan Home in Louisville. Lott wanted his wife to obtain opinions of Hancock County women on this measure. Another letter describes a final tribute to former governor Simon Bolivar Buckner (Lott's namesake), who died in January, 1914. The collection also includes one letter by Lott's wife and a family photograph.
