Feeding the Dairy Cow Without Silagc
By J. J. HOOPER
lt is possible to forniulate a good dairy ration even if silage
is not available. The point to remember is that the eow must be
fed a ration that will supply nutrients required both for the
proiluetierr of milk and for the maintenanee of the body of the
eow. livery day the eow should have 2.48 pounds of digestible
protein and 15,81 pounds of t·arl>o|iydrates and fats. or a total
of1S.3 pounds of digestible nutrients, if she weighs 1.000 pounds
and produees daily 3 gallons (26 pounds) of milk.
'l`o meet these requirements. the eow may be fed a balaneed
grain mixture of 4 pounds eorn»meal. 3 pounds wheat bran and
i 2 pounds eottonseed meal. all mixed together and fed at tl1e rate
of 1 pound of the mixture for eaeh 3 pounds of milk. or 8%
” Dellllds of the mixture per day for 3 gallons of milk. Feed the
I grain with 15 pounds ot` elover hay and all the eorn stoyer or
sorglnnn fodder the eow will elean up. If elover hay or some
— other legume like alt`all`a, eowpea hay. ete.. eannot be supplied, ‘
I then more protein must be added to the grain portion of the
· ration by the liberal use of protein-rieh eoneentrates. but instead
of adding more eottonseed meal it will be well to employ linseed
meal. gluten feed, soybean or peanut meal.
I Tabnlated, the ration suggested for a thousand-pound cow
, prodneing 3 gallons of milk daily, is as follows; _
