Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Rural Sociology was first organized in the 1930s as a section in the University of Kentucky’s former department of Farm Management. In 1948, under the directorship of faculty member Howard W. Beers, Rural Sociology was established as its own department within the College of Agriculture. Rural Sociology, as with other departments in the university’s agricultural division, was also a department in the Agricultural Experiment Station and the Agricultural Extension Services, as well as in the College of Agriculture and Home Economics.
- The Department of Rural Sociology was restructured in 1966 in order to integrate services facilitated by the College of Agriculture and the College of Arts and Sciences. The Department of Sociology was a division of both colleges, with rural sociology as a specialization, until 2002. The College of Agriculture then formed the Department of Community and Leadership Development, a program which studies rural sociology, agricultural education, and agricultural communication. The Department of Sociology continues presently as a department of UK’s College of Arts and Sciences. The College of Agriculture has since been renamed the College of Agriculture, Food, and Environment.
- Scope and Content
- The University of Kentucky Department of Rural Sociology records and publications (dated 1935-1980, undated; 0.53 cubic feet; 1 document box, 1 slim document box, 1 oversize folder) primarily comprise departmental articles and reports that date largely from the 1960s, focusing on sociological and agricultural trends and developments in rural Kentucky. These include many population estimate reports for Kentucky counties based on census data. The records also contain conference proceedings, seminar course instruction materials, and administrative files that document the University of Kentucky's Department of Rural Sociology. There are also bibliographies, pamphlets, and programs that relate to the university's establishment of the Southeast Community College in Cumberland, Kentucky, and to the research and scholarly activity of various department faculty, including George A. Hillery, Jr.; J. J. Mangalam; Harry K. Schwarzweller; David L. Kruegel; Richard L. Ludtke; and E. Grant Youmans.
