New Indy coach Isaiah Thomas made a move to add him to his coaching staff. “With that change. I‘ve elevated Reggie (Hanson) to a full-time assistant. That means he’ll be able to go out on the road re- cruiting. We‘re doing this on an interim basis and see how it goes.” Smith said. Felton had three seasons at UK and “{2}; a part of the 1998 NCAA championship s . “He‘ll be sorely missed. because he‘s done. such an outstanding job not just in recruiting, but in all aspects of coaching.‘ Smith said. To replace him, two assistant coaches have. been added to Smith‘s bench. Assistant coach David Hobbs is re united with coach Smith after the pair worked together as assistant coaches in the early '805 at Virginia Commonwealth University. Hobbs joins Kentucky after a tvmyear absence from the game, though his experi- ence includes 15 years at Alabama. of which three were as head coach. UK also welcomes home fan-favorite and four-year letter winner Reggie Hanson. Originally brought in as director of basketball operations, Hanson was named as an assistant coach by Smith Oct. 19 after Felton’s departure. “We didn‘t want to bring someone on board and reestablish so many things this See COACHES on 2 HMO rumosm The rest See how the competition shapes up. REACH Continued from page A1 UK shot a dismal 42.3 per- cent from the field last season, the team's worst mark since the 196263 squad tallied a 40.5 percent success rate. Equally as disappointing was the fact that the Cats’ shot a terrible 29.2 percent from three-point range, the worst since the arc was adopted for the 1987 season. The coach feels things will change for the better. Smith hopes that UK's veterans will improve and that the skills of the newcomers will manifest themselves. “J.P. Blevins, Saul Smith and Todd Tackett are all better shooters than their effort showed last year. and with the addition of Gerald Fitch, Cory Sears and Marquis Estill, those percentages should rise," Smith said of the Cats‘ improvements. Such a development would do nothing but expand the Cats' already considerable reach. COACH“ Continued from page Al late into the year," Smith said. “I like people who are loyal. Reggie is very talented and has already shown a tremendous work ethic.” Hanson is definitely loyal. During his playing career at UK, an NCAA investigation re- sulted in UK being banned from postseason play for two years. Hanson still had two years re- maining and everyone expected him to jump ship - he shocked everyone and stayed, finishing his collegiate basketball career with UK. He has spent the last eight years of his career plying his trade in Japan‘s basketball league, six of which were as player-assistant coach. In Japan he averaged 20.6 points, 8.7 assists and 3.3 assists per game. He also recorded 1.6 blocks and 2.6 steals a game. Hanson had a distin- guished playing career at UK. He still ranks as No. 34 on the all-time scoring list for UK and has the honor of being in the 1.000-point club. During his ju- nior and senior years, Hanson led the team in rebounds, blocked shots and steals on his way to accumulating 1,167 ca~ reer points. Despite the changes, Smith has no worries. “I think we have an excel- lent stafi'. and the work is heavy right now with the changes and so much to do,” Smith said. LADIES Continued from page A1 said. “It‘s going to take some time and we are going to be patient." Helm provides stability in- side the paint, but UK‘s back- court should provide more depth and experience. McDole has improved her outside game as a starter at small forward and Adams and Young give UK two immediate options at point guard. Freshman Kristin Connol- ly is a likely replacement to Wait at shooting guard. Her outside shooting ability has been chronicled by Mattox and the UK coaching staff. Still, UK’s youth and inex- perience outweigh the opti- mism of their potential, but with less pressure to contend the Cats will not disappoint again and can only surprise. “This is a young basketball team, but the thing I like about them is they will be tip for any challenge we put up to them," Mattox said. “But we have to be patient." n ith 'ill est ith ter )rt he try ill. iId ts' 11d he )19 all as tsv ier 1.6 el- vy nd 31- er as 1d .‘X- ti- ut 1d nt 1y n be ktnrucitv ktnnitfimgm. AllIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII‘ IAKEA LOOK Season at a glance Bring on the best again: Cats eye highly-ranked Kansas In the Big Apple, road trips to Michigan State, North Carolina, Louisville and the always-tough Southeastern Conference JACKSONVILLE s'r. GAMECOGKS RED STORM Mike LaPLante was introduced as Jacksonvile State coach May 3 after serving on Auburn's coaching staff for four years under Cliff Ellis. Nov. 21 Time: 8 p.m. Place: First Star Center Broadcast: ESPNZ, WBUI. FM-98.1 Last matchup: First meeting between the two schools. Keys to the game: Unlike last season, UK needs to hit the 0ueen City ready to play. Last year, the Cats lost in a shocker to the Atlantic-10's innocous Dayton Flyers. If they are ready, the game could be a confidence builder leading up to the home opener against Penn State. Bottom line: Even USC's Game- cocks have trouble with UK. The Jacksonville Jaguars may have a better chance of upsetting the Cats. UK wins in a rout and moves to 2-1. PENN STATE NI'I'I'ANY LIONS Penn State senior Joe Crispin aver- aged 18.5 PPG last year. His broth- er, Jon, is a sophomore for Penn State. Nov. 25 Time: 8 p.m. Place: Rupp Arena Broadcast: UKTV, WBUL FM-98.l Last matchup: UK won 84-59 in the 1955 NCAA Tournament. Keys to the game: Take it easy on Thanksgiving to stave away cramping. Feed off of the home crowd instead. The bottom line: Penn State will be mediocre in the Big-10 and it's UK's first home game. Cats feast on fellow kitties and win by double digits. UK improves to 3-1. EASTERN KENTUCKY COLONELS EKU coach Travis Ford played for UK from 1992-94 and ranks 8th all-time at UK in assists and third in career three-pointers made. 8.4;. ,. . Avis... Dec. 5 Time: 8 p.m. Place: Rupp Arena Broadcast: UKTV, WBUL FM-98.l Last matchup: UK won 99-64 at Rupp Arena in 1998-99. Keys to the game: Keep Travis Ford from suiting up. Rumor has it he's still a dead-eye from downtown and for his team to have a chance he may need to recruit some of his old team- mates like Jamal Mashburn and Tony Delk. UK tries to go 7-0 all-time against the Colonels. The bottom line: UK wins and EKU takes home one of the Big Blue's favorite sons and some loot for showing up and taking a beating. UK extends its record to 5-1 on the season. H1070 FURNISHED UNC center Brendan Haywood Is a force inside the paint. Ne averaged 13. 6 PFC and shot .697 percent from the field last year. ST. JOHN East coast. Catholics St. John's freshman point guard Omar Cook played in the 2000 McDonald's High School All-American game. Ne replaces Erick Barkley. who departed to the NBA. Cook Is a fresh- man All-American and will be a key for the Red Storm. if he can out play Saul Smith and handle the UK pressure defense St. John's could upset the Cats in the season opener and go on to win the Coach- es vs. Cancer Classlc in New York City. PlKl‘l’GS FINISHED Time: 9 p.m. Place: New York Madison Square Garden Broadcast: ESPNZ, WBUI. FM-98.1 Last matchup: UK won 86-77 at Madison Sguare Garden. Keys to the game: An especially early start for both teams, so don't expect it to be pretty. Saul will get his first big test at the point, after a horrendous 2000 March. Watchout for freshman Omar Cook, a McDonald's All-American in high school. The Johnnies are on a down year, though. The bottom line: UK wins and puts up 80-plus. UCLA OR KANSAS Siiiiifiiii Kansas coach Roy Williams turned down a chance to return to his alma mater. North Car- olina, for his dream job this offseason. His team is loaded and has four returning starters and three seniors. Guard Kenny Gre- gory and center Eric Chenowith are expected to lift the Jayhawks beyond past frustrations. Williams has not beaten the Cats in three chances ' since a lopsided 150-95 victory in Lawrence, Kans., in 1990. Nov. 10 Time: 6:30/9 p.m. Place: Papa Madison Square Garden Broadcast: ESPNZ. WBUL FM-98.1 Last matchup: UK 92, Kansas 88 in OT in 1999 NCAA Tournament; UK 66, UCLA 62 in 1998 NCAAs. Keys to the game: More than likely, UK and Kansas should be pinned up for another great matchup. Tubby could have Roy Williams' num- ber, but that ain't saying much. The bottom line: It is too early for UK to face a top 5 team and they get their first loss and drop to 1-1. NORTH CAROLINA TAR HEELS Game of the year: Storied programs battle Dec. 2 Time: 3:30 p.m. Place: Dean E. Smith Center Broadcast: CBS-27. WBUL FM-98.1 Last matchup: UNC 71, UK 61 i
