- Biography / History
- William H. Cooke (1852-1914) was born in New York to Robert and Sarah Cooke. He was a Congregationalist minister, missionary, and Sunday school teacher. In 1882, he married Ada Locke (1857-1924) and together they had five children: Weldon Baxter (1884-1914), Winfred (1885-1886), Alma Locke (1887-1970), Robert Locke (1889-1955), and Hester (1895-1979). The family was living in Oakland, California by the 1890s.
- American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
- Scope and Content
- The W.H. Cooke diaries (dated 1886-1913, undated; 0.68 cubic feet; 2 boxes) comprises diaries that document the life of William H. Cooke and his family in Oakland, California while he worked as a preacher and missionary. The diaries include entries about the daily weather, the health of William and his family, sermons, meeting with parishioners, travel, visiting with family and friends, and his missionary efforts. There are two diaries written by his wife, Ada, and she describes daily life with their children, their health, chores around the house, visiting with family and friends, sightseeing in California, helping her children's education, and supporting their hobbies. One diary is from Weldon Baxter, William and Ada's son, describing his daily life, playing with friends, helping out around the house, going to school, and learning photography.
- The W.H. Cooke diaries collection is part of the Wade Hall Collection of American letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
